Scilicet hoc poteris ; sed non conceditur ultra :

Morte obitâ, nihil est, quod patiamur, aduc.

IX.

Ultima tu rerum, requies mortalibus ægris,

Me compone tuo, conde, benigna, finu; Tu, Mors, fola potes fluctus fedare doloris,

Then soft and low a voice was heard

Say, - Mary, weep no more for me.

II.

She from her pillow gently rais'd

Her head, to ask who there might be,

And saw young Sandy, shiv’ring, stand,

With pallid cheek and hollow eye:

"O Mary dear, cold is my clay,

« It lies beneath the stormy sea,

« Far, far from thee, I sleep in death,

“ So Mary weep no more for me.

III.

« Three stormy nights and stormy days,

“ We toss’d upon the raging main,

“ And long we strove our bark to save,

" But all our fteriving was in vain :

« E’en

Cum tecto exilis vox est audita filenti,

« Desine væ! Aetus, chara Maria, tuos.”

Illa caput paulùm lecto, perculsa, levabat,

Quæsitura velut, quid foret ille fonus,

Sandy videt stantem, tremebundum frigore spectrum;

Concavus est oculus, palluerantque genæ :
« Cara Maria! meum domuit mors frigida corpus,

“. Jamque artus gelidos, osfaque pontus habet ;

“ Hinc procul, in longum folvuntur lumina fomnum,

« Define væ! fetus, define, chara, tuos.

“ Tres noctes, totidemque dies, super æquora femen ponte,

“ Huc, illuc, quaffam dispulit unda ratem ;

« E'en then, when horror chill'd my blood,

“ My heart was fillid with love for thee.

“ The storm is past, and I at rest,

“ So Mary weep no more for me.

IV.

« O maiden dear, thyself prepare,

c. We foon shall meet upon that shore,

« Where love is free from doubt and care,

" And thou and I shall part no more."

Loud crow'd the cock-the shadow fled ;

No more of Sandy could she see; But soft the passing spirit said,

« So Mary weep no more for me.”

" At tunc, membra mihi gelidus cum perculit horror,

“ Tunc etiain caluit pectore fidus amor;

► Actum est, tempeftas filuit, nunc ipse quiesco,

“ Define væ! fletus, define, chara, tuos.

IV.

“ Nec tibi longa mora est; aderis dulcisima virgo;

« Nos melior fedes, oraque læta manet, « Quâ fecurus amor; nec mors disjunget amantes,

“ Nec mentem poterit follicitare timor."

Signa dedit cantu gallus : disceslit imago :

Et nusquam potuit cernere Sandy fuum, Lenè fed increpitans, dum præterlabitur umbra,

“ Desine,” ait, “ fictus, chara Maria, tuos.”
