"Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends."
207. WHEREVER through the ages rise The altars of self-sacrifice, Where love its arms hath opened wide, Or man for man has calmly died,
We see the same white wings outspread, That hovered o'er the Master's head; And in all lands beneath the sun The heart affirmeth, "Love is one." Up from undated time they come, The martyr-souls of heathendom, And to his cross and passion bring Their fellowship of suffering.
O MASTER, let me walk with thee In lowly paths of service free: Tell me thy secret; help me bear The strain of toil, the fret of care; Help me the slow of heart to move By some clear, winning word of love; Teach me the wayward feet to stay, And guide them in the homeward way. Teach me thy patience; still with thee In closer, dearer company,
In work that keeps faith sweet and strong, In trust that triumphs over wrong;
In hope that sends a shining ray Far down the future's broadening way; In peace that only thou canst give, With thee, O Master, let me live !
LEAD, kindly Light, amid the encircling gloom, I loved the garish day, and, spite of fears,
I loved to choose and see my path; but now Which I have loved long since, and lost
My life flows on in endless song; Above earth's lamentation,
I hear the sweet, though far-off hymn That hails a new creation; Through all the tumult and the strife I hear the music ringing; It finds an echo in my soul
How can I keep from singing? What though my joys and comforts die, The Lord my Helper liveth! What though the darkness gather round: Songs in the night He giveth! No storm can shake my inmost calm While to that refuge clinging; Since God is Lord of heaven and earth, How can I keep from singing?
I lift mine eyes; the cloud grows thin, I see the blue above it, And day by day this pathway smooths Since first I learned to love it. The peace of God makes fresh my heart, A fountain ever springing; All things are mine, since I am His How can I keep from singing?
I'VE found a Friend; oh,such a Friend! He loved me ere I knew Him! He drew me with the cords of love And thus He bound me to Him. And round my heart still closely twine Those ties which nought can sever, For I am His, and He is mine, For ever and for ever! I've found a Friend; oh,such a Friend! All power by Him is given, To guard me all my earthly way,
And end that way in Heaven; Nought that I have my own I call, I hold it for the GiverMy heart, my strength, my life, my all, Are His, and His for ever! I've found a Friend; oh,such a Friend! So loving, true and tender, So wise a Counsellor and Guide, So mighty a Defender! From Him who loves my soul so well. What power my soul can sever? Shall life or death? or earth-or hell? No! I am His for ever.
