LORD, when we bend before thy throne,
And our confessions pour,
Teach us to mourn the sins we own,
And shun what we deplore.
Our contrite spirits pitying see,
True penitence impart ;
And let a healing ray from Thee, Beam hope on every heart.
When we disclose our wants in prayer, May we our wills resign; And not a thought our bosoms share, Which is not wholly thine.
Let faith each weak petition fill,
And lift it to the skies;
And teach us, Lord, 'tis goodness still That grants it, or denies.
HAVE mercy, Lord, on me,
As Thou wert ever kind;
Let me, oppress'd with loads of guilt,
Thy wonted mercy find.
Against Thee, Lord, alone,
And only in thy sight,
Have I transgress'd, and though condemn'd Must own thy judgments right.
Blot out my crying sins, Nor me in anger view; Create in me a heart that 's clean, An upright mind renew.
A broken spirit is
By God most highly prized; By Him a broken contrite heart Shall never be despised.
OUR great Redeemer and our Lord, We read our duty in thy word; But in thy life the law appears Drawn out in living characters.
Thy love of truth, thine ardent zeal, Thy deference to thy Father's will, The meekness which around Thee shone, We would transcribe and make our own.
Cold mountains and the midnight air Witness'd the fervour of thy prayer; The desert thy temptations knew, Thy conflict and thy vict'ry too.
Be Thou our pattern; make us bear More of thy gracious image here; And, O! at last our names record Amongst the children of the Lord!
LORD, I am vile, conceiv'd in sin, And born unholy and unclean; Thy law demands a perfect heart, But we 're defil'd in every part.
A broken heart, my God, my King, Is all the sacrifice I bring:
The God of grace will ne'er despise A broken heart for sacrifice.
My soul lies humbled in the dust, And owns thy dreadful sentence just; Look down, O Lord, with pitying eye, And save the soul condemn'd to die.
Then will I teach the world thy ways; Sinners shall learn thy sovereign grace; I'll lead them to my Saviour's blood, And they shall praise a pard'ning God.
SHEW pity, Lord; O Lord, forgive; Let a repenting sinner live : Are not thy mercies large and free? May not the guilty trust in Thee?
My sins, though great, do not surpass The power and glory of thy grace; O wash my soul from every sin, And make my guilty conscience clean.
My lips with shame my sins confess, Against thy law, against thy grace: Lord, should thy judgment be severe, I am condemn'd, but Thou art clear.
Yet save a trembling sinner, Lord,
Whose hope, still hov'ring round thy word, Would light on some sweet promise there, Some sure support against despair.
SAVIOUR! when in dust to Thee Low we bow th' adoring knee; When repentant, to the skies Scarce we lift our weeping eyes; O! by all thy pains and woe, Suffer'd once for man below, Bending from thy throne on high, Hear our solemn litany.
By thy birth and early years, By thy life of want and tears, By thy fasting and distress In the lonely wilderness, By thy vict'ry in that hour O'er the subtle tempter's power, Jesu, look with pitying eye, Hear our solemn litany.
By thy deep expiring groan, By the seal'd sepulchral stone, By thy triumph o'er the grave, By thy power from death to save; Mighty God, ascended Lord! To thy throne in heaven restor'd, Prince and Saviour! hear the cry Of our solemn litany.
FROM lowest depths of woe To God I send my cry;
Lord, hear my supplicating voice, And graciously reply.
Should'st Thou severely judge, Who can the trial bear? But Thou forgiv'st, lest we despond, And quite renounce thy fear.
My soul with patience waits For Thee, the living Lord; My hopes are on thy promise built,
Thy never-failing word.
Let Israel trust in God,
No bounds his mercy knows;
The plenteous source and spring from whence Eternal succour flows;
Whose friendly streams to us Supplies in want convey;
A healing spring, a spring to cleanse, And wash our guilt away..
Are ever to the Lord;
I love to plead his promises, And rest upon his word.
Thy mercies and thy love, O Lord, recall to mind; And graciously continue still, As Thou wert ever, kind.
