Prudence, ftifling Infant-Strife;

Friendship, Remedy of Life;

Truft, in mutual Faith fecure;

Transport generous and pure,
Sparkling from the Soul within,
Never boasted, always feen:

Kind while each their Care employs

Griefs to part, and double Joys,

Joys to Libertines unknown,

Fruits of Wedlock Truth alone;

Joys that Angels may approve,
All the Dignity of Love!

Show'r thine Influence from on high,

Author of the Nuptial Tye;

Show'r thy Graces, Holy Dove!

God of Peace, and God of Love!

VIII.

When late the Summons from above

Parts the Life, but not the Love,

Re

Resign'd and calm may She or I
Teach Survivors how to die:
Be free from Sin's polluting Stain

Void of Fear, and void of Pain!

For tedious Years may neither moan,
Sad, deferted, and alone;

May neither, long condemn'd to stay,
Wait their Second Bridal Day.
Grant us, oh grant, Almighty Pow'r!

Soon to meet, and part no more,

In Heav'n where Love and Joys are known
Only purer than our own:

Heav'n our last Wish and farthest Aim!

Mystick Marriage of the Lamb!

Show'r thine Influence from on high,

Author of the Nuptial Tye;

Show'r thy Graces, Holy Dove!

God of Peace, and God of Love!

The beauteous Choirs advance;

Graceful each Virgin moves, but she
Most graceful in the Dance.

Macenas, fay does Phrygia bear,

Or can Arabia fend

The easy-ravish'd Bliss.

PARAPHASE on the viiith P S AL M.

[ocr errors]

God! how glorious is thy Name!

Thy Praife Heav'n's highest Orbs [proclaim,

And distant Earth refounds the fame.

Thro' all thy Works fuch Pow'r appears;

Such Wonders strike our Eyes and Ears

So bright, fo quick on ev'ry Sense

Dart all thy Rays of Excellence:

They loose the stamm'ring Infant's Tongue,

And fucking Babes excite to Song,

The rustic Idiot looks on high,

And streight he's taught Philofophy:

No Books he wants, no Terms of Art;
Full flows the Language of his Heart;
