1. Every substantive matter or point contained in each article, section, and clause, embracing every subject and definition in the Constitution, has been arranged in alphabetical order.

2. Under the head of each branch or department of the Government, has been shewn its powers, duties, restrictions, privileges, and joint or concurrent power with other branches or departments. 3. By this arrangement the entire instrument is resolved into its elements, and presented in a form more inviting to the mental vision, and more easily impressed upon the memory.

THE CONSTITUTION,

As printed in this edition, has been collated with the original manuscript in the Department of State, and found to agree with it in every particular, as to text, letter, and punctuation.

An Alphabetical Analysis of the Constitution of the United States, and of the amendments thereto.

Absence. In the absence of the Vice President the Senate shall choose a President pro tem.
Absent members. A smaller number than a majority of either House of Congress may com-
pel the attendance of absent members, in such manner, and under such penalties, as
each House may provide.
Accept. No person holding any office of profit or trust under the United States, shall, with-
out the consent of Congress, accept of any present, emolument, office, or title, of
any kind whatever, from any king, prince, or foreign states.........

A regular statement and account of the receipts and expenditures of all public
money shall be published from time to time...

Account.
Accusation. In all criminal prosecutions, the accused to be informed of the nature and cause
of the accusation..
Acts, records, and judicial proceedings. Full faith and credit shall be given in each State to
the public acts, records, and judicial proceedings of every other State. And the
Congress may, by general laws, prescribe the manner in which such acts, records,
and judicial proceedings shall be proved, and the effect thereof...

Act as President. In case of the removal, death, resignation, or inability, of both the Presi-
dent and Vice President, the Congress shall, by law, declare what officer shall then
act as President, and such officer shall act accordingly until the disability be re-
moved, or a President shall be elected..

Adjourn from day to day. A smaller number than a majority of each House of Congress may adjourn from day to day.............

Adjourn. Neither House during the session of Congress shall, without the consent of the

other, adjourn for more than three days, nor to any other place than that in which
the two Houses may be sitting..

Adjournment. If any bill shall not be returned by the President within ten days (Sundays
excepted) after it shall have been presented to him, the same shall be a law, in like
manner as if he had signed it, unless the Congress by their adjournment prevent its
return, in which case it shall not be a law.

Adjournment. Every order, resolution, or vote, to which the concurrence of the Senate and
House of Representatives may be necessary, (except on a question of adjournment,)

Adjournment. In case of disagreement between the two Houses of Congress with respect to
the time of adjournment, the President may adjourn them to such time as he shall
think proper.
Admiralty and maritime jurisdiction. The judicial power shall extend to all cases of admi-
ralty and maritime jurisdiction.

Admitted. New States may be admitted by the Congress into this Union.......

Adoption of this Constitution. All debts contracted or engagements entered into before the adoption of this Constitution, shall be as valid against the United States under this Constitution as under the Confederation..

the recess of the legislatures thereof to fill vacancies.

Appointments. The President shall nominate, and by and with the advice and consent of the

Senate, shall appoint ambassadors, other public ministers, and consuls, judges of the

not herein otherwise provided for, and which shall be established by law. But the
Congress may by law vest the appointment of such inferior officers, as they think
proper, in the President alone, in the courts of law, or in the heads of departments
