the same, placid and intuitive, more human and bodily than the paintings, yet too divine to be over real. It is to that house, with the gallery in question, and the little green plot of ground, surrrounded with an arcade and busts, that we owe the greatest part of our love for what is Italian and belongs to the fine arts. And if this is a piece of private history, with which the readers have little to do, they will excuse it for the sake of the greatest of all excuse, which is Love.

STORIES from FROISSART. By the late BARRY ST. LEGER, Esq., Author of " Gilbert Earle," &c. 3 vols.

FIELD SPORTS of the NORTH. By L. LLOYD. Second edition, considerably improved and enlarged, and embellished with twenty-three Plates; in 2 vols. 8vo.

One of the most valuable productions ever given to the Sporting World. It is full of individual adventure, often of the most romantic and perilous kind.-Courier.

The HISTORY of MODERN GREECE. BY JAMES EMERSON, Esq. of Trinity College, Dublin. In 2 large vols. 8vo. 16s.

This important work will supply a deficiency often felt and regretted in English literature. The annals of the country, which at every stage abound with the strongest interest, are followed up to the present day, and include, of course, a history of the late Revolution.'-Globe.

TRAVELS in GREECE and ALBANIA. By the Rev. T. S. HUGHES, B. D. Second Edition, with numerous important Additions, and thirty-three Embellishments, presenting the most picturesque illustrations of the scenery, costumes, and habits of Greece and Albania, and including the Portraits of the present Sultan Mahmout, and of the late notorious Ali Pasha, of Janina. The second edition in 8vo. of this valuable work on Greece, which has taken its stand as a universal companion to the Grecian historians and poets, is illustrative not only of the topography and antiquities of Albania, the Morea, and the Archipelago, but is equally comprehensive as regards the cradle of the Muses, Sicily. By the publication of the second edition, in two vols. 8vo., the extensive design of the Author is fulfilled; and no scene of any famous event, no mountain or valley, lake or river, hallowed by the poets,-no renowned edifice, or magical piece of sculpture is left unexplored or unexamined by actual research on the spot.'

Globe.

The LIFE and WRITINGS of HENRY FUSELI, Esq. M.A., R. A., Keeper and Professor of Painting to the Royal Academy in London. The former written, and the latter edited by JOHN KNOWLES, Esq. F.R.S. 3 vols. 8vo. 21s.

Perhaps the most valuable work, as regards the fine arts, ever published in England. Every one who possesses the Lectures of Sir Joshua Reynolds, should possess also those of Fuseli, comprised in the above work, together with his history of the Italian schools of painting and sculpture. These must be invaluable to the student, and to the innumerable lovers of whatever is great and beautiful in art.'Globe.

The LIFE and CORRESPONDENCE of TITIAN. By JAMES NORTHCOTE, Esq., R. A. With Anecdotes of the distinguished Persons of his time. In 2 vols. 8vo., with a fine portrait of Titian, now first engraved from an original, painted by himself at the age of ninety-nine.

'Such a book as this has long been wanted.'-Courier.

In its pages figure all the great and talented men of that brilliant age-the magnificent Leo, the generous patron of art; Francis the First, and the ambitious Charles the Fifth; Aretin the historian; the learned Bembo; the extravagant, but exquisitively tasteful Cellini, &c. Titian was the companion of princes, and his accounts of the Court of the Emperor, and of those of Francis the First and Philip, are to the last degree interesting. The era of Titian was indeed the Augustan age of Italian art. The volumes include a variety of curious correspondence from the pens of Vasari, Michael Angelo, Annibal Caracci, and many other distinguished characters.'-Globe.

8vo. 16s.

'A work singularly attractive from the novelty of the subjects, and the powerful manner in which they are treated.'

On the 1st of December was commenced the Monthly Publication of

THE NAVAL AND MILITARY LIBRARY OF ENTERTAINMENT: a series of works from the pens of distinguished Officers. Now first collected.

This Publication will be conducted on the same plan as Colburn's Modern Novelists. A Set will be issued every month, handsomely printed in post 8vo. and bound in morocco cloth, price only 4s. per

volume.

The principles of economy and general convenience which have already suggested, in several successful instances, the cheap monthly publication of works pertaining to the lighter and more amusing departments of literature, have not yet been called into operation, in a similar manner, for the benefit of the Army and Navy. This omission is now about to be rectified by the formation of a collection particularly suited to the tastes and pursuits of the members of the two Services, and comprising the choicest productions of modern times; and the entire Series, limited to twenty volumes, will form, it is trusted, such a library of entertainment as will prove a desirable acquisition for enlivening the social hours of every Mess and Gun-room at home and abroad.

The First Number contains the NAVAL OFFICER, by Captain Marryatt. In 3 vols.

CHEAP LIBRARY OF MODERN FICTION. Publishing Monthly, price only 4s. per volume, handsomely printed in post 8vo. and bound in morocco cloth: COLBURN'S MODERN NOVELISTS.

[blocks in formation]

FLIRTATION. BY LADY CHARLOTTE BURY.

In publishing monthly the various Novels of which this Collection will be formed, it is intended to afford the public an opportunity of obtaining, at a cost little exceeding one-third of their original prices, some of the most sterling and admired works of fiction that have emanated from the pens of living writers.

ENGLISH, SCOTCH, AND IRISH NOBILITY AND GENTRY.

The Fourth Edition, dedicated, by permission, to the King, in 2 vols. (comprising all the New Creations), beautifully printed, and illustrated with upwards of 1,500 Engravings, among which is a fine Likeness of his Majesty, after Sir Thomas Lawrence's celebrated Drawing; price £2. 10s. bound in morocco cloth :

BURKE'S PEERAGE AND BARONETAGE OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE.

This new edition comprises three times the number of families that have ever before been presented to the public in any one publication of a similar description. It embraces every family in England, Ireland, and Scotland, invested with hereditary honours, and every individual in the remotest degree allied to those families; so that its collateral information is now considerably more copious than that of any similar work hitherto published.

Elegantly printed in royal 8vo. and embellished with accurate Engravings of the Armorial Bearings of each Family, and a fine Portrait of the Speaker, price £1. 11s. 6d. bound in morocco cloth, the first volume of the

HISTORY of the COMMONERS of GREAT RRITAIN and IRELAND. By JOHN BURKE, Esq., forming a desirable Companion to the Peerage and Baronetage.

"This is a great and important undertaking. Of the Peers and the Baronets of Great Britain we have heard and read; but of the Commoners-of families equally celebrated in history-we remain in total ignorance. We are glad to find Mr. Burke employed in removing a national reproach. He has contrived to make his book not. only very useful, but highly interesting-many rare and curious anecdotes having been introduced."-Globe.

CHEAP LIBRARY OF IRISH ROMANCE.

On the 1st of December was published, uniform with Colburn's Modern Novelists, and on the same plan, handsomely printed in post 8vo., and bound in morocco cloth, price only 4s. per volume, IRISH NATIONAL TALES.

By the most distinguished Modern Authors. Now first collected.

That which has already been done for Scottish National History, by the uniform collection of Sir Walter Scott's admirable Tales, is here proposed to be done in behalf of Irish Story, by the reproduction, on the much approved plan of cheap monthly publication, of the most celebrated works of modern times, illustrative of the manners and peculiarities of the Sister Kingdom. The entire series will not extend beyond nineteen volumes.

The first Monthly Set consists of THE NOWLANS, by the Author of the O'Hara Tales. In 3 vols.

PAUL CLIFFORD, by the Author of Pelham. 3 vols. 18s. PAUL CLIFFORD has been justly pronounced superior to the rest of Mr. Bulwer's Novels, inasmuch as it includes within itself the wit and buoyancy of " Pelham," the pathos of "The Disowned," and the historical truth and vigorous delineation of character which distin guished "Devereux."
