The committee will come to order. I asked the subcommittee on fisheries to meet this morning, and while Mr. Peterson is on his way over I will bring to your attention this matter which was brought to my attention by Mr. Sterling Harris who came in to see me. One of my constituents wrote me as follows: Our attention has been called to the fact that consideration is being given to putting canned fish and canned roe under the point system and we respectfully urge you to do what you can to prevent this from being done. We sell a good portion of our fish to concerns for canning purposes and feel if fish was put under the point system, when the housewife does her shopping, she would not use the coupons for the purchase of canned fish or roe but would use them for the purchase of staple goods, and this would mean a serious blow to all the fishermen as the canners would not buy fish for this purpose, realizing the canned fish would not sell. Then there was a letter from the Fleming Brokerage Co., of Richmond, Va.: I understand there will be a meeting shortly in connection with the O. P. A. in reference to canned, processed, and fresh fish. I do not know what that meeting is. 1 |
