The thirty-four essays in Porphyrogenita reflect the life-long teaching and research interests of Julian Chrysostomides, Director of the Hellenic Institute, Royal Holloway, University of London. Covering Byzantine history, historiography, hagiography, theology and monasticism, Latin rule in the Greek East, and Greek palaeography, the studies encompass both the latest research by the foremost authorities in the field, and provide important texts that have never appeared in print before. These include two works connected to the emperor Manuel II Palaeologus (1391-1425) - his own 'A Depiction of Spring in a Dyed, Woven Hanging', and a funeral oration on him by an unknown author - and writings by the 13th-century scholars Nicephorus Blemmydes and Constantine Acropolites.
