PREFACE. THE completion of our Third Volume gives us the opportunity of another pleasant greeting to our numerous Readers. We have been cheered with many an unsought testimony to the usefulness of our MAGAZINE, and we trust that its influence for good has been felt in numerous instances which the last great revelation of man's reciprocal action on his fellow man will alone unfold. To train the Teacher's intellect, to kindle his affections, to direct his judgment, to sustain his patience, to animate his hope-this has been our aim, and, we thank God, the effort has not been fruitless. We enter upon another year amidst unusual excitement, and deep feelings of anxiety in most men's minds for the future. Be it ours (with the great body of those to whom we are addressing ourselves) to persevere in our humble work as Teachers tending the Lambs of the Flock, for the sake and in the name of the Great Shepherd of the Sheep. Amidst the overflowings of ungodliness-amidst the transient triumph of the enemy amidst the tremblings of the wavering and the desertion of the unfaithful-be it ours to trust in Him who "Rides on the whirlwind and directs the storm." The FUTURE is his, and with Him may we leave it, in faith that his word cannot fail; the PRESENT He has committed to us; and not in the agony of despair, not in the murmurs of impatience, not in the tumult of unbelief; but in the daily use of our privileges-in the daily improvement of our means of usefulness-in the living work of living faith-thus would He have us give full meaning to our constant prayer, December, 1850.
