tions as the one before us, treating of matters of general interest, in a spirit of religion, without an improper or forced introduction of sacred truths, which would go far to defeat its own ends.

SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHING;

its object and method practically con sidered; together with a Chapter on Day-Schools, and an Appendix of Skeleton Lessons. By the Rev. J. F. Serjeant, Curate of St. George's, Douglas, Isle of Man. 12mo. pp. 182. Nisbet & Co., Berner's Street. WHEN about starting our Quarterly Magazine, we well remember being told by a secretary of a religious society, that he considered the subject of Sunday Schools worn thread-bare." There was as little justice as there was courtesy in the remark. Sunday-school literature has certainly increased rapidly during the last few years, but even now there are a very large number of teachers who read none, and therefore we cannot but hail every additional labourer in the great cause.

We have read this book carefully through, and can truly recommend it to our readers. We have no space to go into detail about it now, but hope to recur to it on a future occasion.

MAMMA'S OWN RIDDLE BOOK, or Home made Cheerful. Square 24mo.pp.36. Houlston and Stoneman, Paternoster Row.

FOR a leisure hour on a week-day evening, when "lessons are done," this little book will be a welcome recreation. We can commend both the sense and

the rhyme.

Take the following really clever lines as a specimen.

"THE bond of peace, the end of strife,

The close of every human life;

The boundary of time and space,

The terminus of every place.

It aids the friend, it moulds the tear,

It makes the week, it forms the year;
In evening shades it takes delight,
But always disappears at night.

EVENING CLASSES FOR YOUNG MEN, their objects and usefulness. An Introductory Lecture. By Rev. G. S. Drew, Minister of St. John's, St. Pancras Thomson, Upper King Street, London.

THE subject of this Introductory Lecture is one of immense importance in both a social and religious point of view, increasingly so as the early closing movement makes way; and therefore we cannot but feel thankful when such men as the author, who seek to combine sterling religious principle with social elevation, come forward to lend their energies to the work of Christianising our young

men.

Two Articles on "Separate Services for Children," and one or two minor ones, are in type, but necessarily postponed.

Contributions for our next Number should be sent in by February 29th, accompanied by Name and Address of the Writer, which are never published, unless so directed by himself.

In contemplating the further conduct of this Magazine, we see no reason to introduce any new features into it. Our general arrangement seems to have given satisfaction, and we propose to continue it, begging our many friends to make any suggestions which may occur to them as likely to increase the usefulness of the Magazine.

We repeat our hope of being able, by and bye, to resume the Series of Papers on the Articles, and Lectures on the Pentateuch, interrupted by the promotion of the respected Author. We also hope to go on with two other Series of Papers which have been commenced and suspended-those on the Geography of Palestine and adjacent Countries, and on Scripture Terms and Phrases.

In addition, we purpose giving a Series of Lessons on the Liturgy-not articles for the Teacher's own improvement (for such are being already given in our Monthly Magazine), but Sketches of Lessons for Children, with a view to give them an intelligent comprehension of the Service.

“Teachers' Monthly

The announcement made in our last Number, respecting our Magazine," brought our Committee numerous communications, urging a further trial before abandoning that periodical. They have, therefore, determined on continuing the experiment for another year, trusting, by a decrease in the cost, and an increase in the circulation, to avoid in future the loss they have so far sustained.

For both Magazines, and indeed for all our publications, we would plead with our numerous friends. Do they prove their appreciation of them by endeavouring to increase their sale? We meet continually with Clergymen and Teachers who have never heard of us at all. If our friends will kindly do what they can to introduce our Publications they will materially assist us, and, we sincerely believe, assist also those Teachers who feel their own deficiencies and welcome any really useful assistance.

The following are the arrangements (as far as completed) for the ensuing Quarter January 7th.-DEVOTIONAL MEETING.
