PUERTO REAL, a considerable town in the south-west of Spain, in the province of Seville, 5 miles E. of Cadiz, situated on the bay near the mouth of the Guada lete. Its streets are straight, airy, and clean, and it is increasing progressively, having had no more than 1500 inhabitants at the beginning of last century, while it now contains more than 10,000. This is the great depot of the salt made in the tanks that surround the isle of Leon and bay of Cadiz on the south-east side. The annual quantity made is estimated at above a million of tons, all prepared by the hea of the sun, a certain quantity of sea wate) being inclosed in an ebb reservoir, and eva porated to a certain consistency, afte which it is admitted to a smaller one, and so on, till the salt crystallises.

PUERTO DE SANTA MARIA, or ST MARY'S, a seaport of Spain, in the province of Seville, 5 miles N. E. of Cadiz, at the mouth of the river Guadalete. The situation is excellent, as far as regards temperature, being exposed neither to the severity of the cold of winter, nor to the scorching heat of summer. The town is unfortified, but

well built: its streets are broad, well paved, and kept carefully clean. The Calle Ancha, or Broad-street, is about a mile in length, and resembles an English town in its bustle and the number of its shops. The houses on the west side of the town have a very fine prospect of the bay and town of Cadiz, and of the romantic country in the neighbourhood. The church and monasteries are remarkable only for a profusion of tasteless ornaments. The public walk is very fine; and on the bank of the Guadalete there is a beautiful gardea, with several pleasant walks ainong Grange trees, intermixed with flowers and aromatic plants. The quay is also very good, but large ships cannot come up, on account of some sand-banks before the mouth of the river. The town contains 12,000 inhabitants, employed partly in the manufacture of linen and printed cotton, more in preparing the bay-salt procured by evaporation from the adjoining salt pits. Here is also a regular traffic in the convey1 tace of the water of one of the fountains to Cadiz, for the supply of the town and of the ships in the harbour. St Mary's is the residence of the captain-general of Andalusia, of a vicar-general, and of an of ial of the archbishop of Castile. PUGANTZ, or BAKA BANYA, & free town of the north-west of Hungary, 29 miles E. of Neutra, and 73 E. N. E. of Presburg. Population 2400. It is the seat of a mine-office, and stands at the foot of a hill containing a valuable mine of gold and silver, inferior only to those of Cremnitz.

PUGET, a small town in the south-east of France, department of the Var, 18 miles N. E. of Toulon.

PUGGEROLA, a town of Italy, in the south-west of the kingdom of Naples, in the Principato Citra. The inhabitants (1000 in number) manufacture large quantities of nails.

PUGLIA, the ancient Apulia, an extensive track in the east of the kingdom of Naples, on the coast of the Adriatic, now forming the provinces of Capitanata, Bari, and Otranto, which see. See also Apulia.

PUIKA, or POYK, a considerable river of Austrian Illyria, in Carniola, remarkable for the space which it flows under ground. At Adelsberg, it enters a subterraneous cavern, runs under ground a distance of eight miles to Planina, where it loses itself again almost immediately, and re-appears at a distance of five miles, under the name of the Laybach. The entrance of the grotto at Adelsberg, is in the form of a Gothic vault, and the appearance extremely awful. The noise of the water ceases for some time, as the traveller advances by a glimmering light; and when he hears it again, the guides are accustomed to light up a straw fire, which shows that he is now arrived at almost impassable precipices, and that he stands on a natural bridge, while the river rolls at a great distance below. Valvasorand Keysler, two German travellers, penetrated to a second bridge, about four miles from the mouth of the cavern, and saw the water eighty or a hundred feet below the place where they stood.

PUISCELEY, a town of France, department of the Tarn, on the Vere, with 1500 inhabitants, employed partly in working in the neighbouring forests, and in manufacturing wooden articles. 12 miles N. W. of Gaillac.

PUIVERT, a town of France, department of the Aude, arrondissement of Limoux. It stands on the river Blau, and has 1400 inhabitants, who manufacture hats and different sorts of wooden articles.

PULACU, a river of Quito, in the province of Loca, which runs south, and enters the Zamora by the north, in Lat. 3. 55. S.

PULARUM ISLE, one of the smallest of the Banda isles, named by all the early navigators Polaroon. The English East India company obtained possession of this island so early as 1617, but were repeatedly expelled by the Dutch. In March 1665, it was formally delivered up by the Dutch to the English, but in so desolated a state (the whole of the spice trees being destroy ed), that this station, which had been the subject of so many treaties and negociations, was rendered totally useless for eight years. PULHAM, a parish of England, in Norfolk, 3 miles N. W. of Harleston. Population 787.

PULLICAT, a seaport town of the south of India, province of the Carnatic. It stauds on the borders of a salt water lake,

33 miles in length, by 11 in breadth, containing several islands, and which communicates with the sea. Vessels may anchor at the distance of two miles from the shore, in seven fathoms water. The Dutch settled here in 1609, and erected a square fort, t which, after the loss of Negapatam, they transferred the seat of their presidency o the Coromandel coast. The inhabitant are principally weavers and fishermen. I is in this town that the esteemed Pullica handkerchiefs are manufactured. It wa taken possession of by the British in 1795 but was restored on the downfal of Bona parte. Long. 80. 25. E. Lat. 13. 26. N.

It rich in the production of spices; the so being particularly favourable for the cul ture of the nutmeg tree, which flourishe in the rich black mould of which the so is composed. It exported, when in posses sion of the British, 300,000 lbs. of nut megs, and 80,000 lbs. of mace,

PULO LAUT, an island in the Eastern seas, at the south entrance of the straits of Macassar, near the south-east coast of the island of Borneo, of a triangular form, about 100 miles in circumference. It is but thinly inhabited; the chief produce is rice. The channel between the island of Pulo Laut and Borneo, is about two miles broad, in some parts less, in others more, and from seven to eight fathoms deep all the way. PULO MEGA (Cloud Island), called by the Europeans TRISTE, or ISLE de Recif, a small uninhabited island in the Eastern seas, surrounded by a coral reef, with a lagune in the centre. Cocoa-nut trees grow in great numbers in the sand near the

sea shore, and afford food to rats or squirrels, the only quadrupeds found here.

PULO NAKC-NAKO, a cluster of small islands in the Eastern seas, near the western coast of the island of Nias. Large quantities of cocoa-nut oil are prepared here, and exported chiefly to Padang. The islands are governed by a single rajah, who monopolises the produce, his subjects dealing only with him, and he with the prows or country vessels.

PULO SANDING, or Sandiang, two small islands in the Eastern seas, near the southeastern extremity of the Nassau or Poggy isles, in which group they are sometimes included. They are both uninhabited, and the only productions that grow on them worth notice, is the long nutmeg, which grows wild, and some good timber. An idea was once entertained of establishing a settlement on them, but it has been abandoned.

PULO TIMOAN, an island in the Eastern seas, inhabited by Malays. Commodore Byron called there in the year 1765, who found them to be a surly insolent set of people. As soon as they saw him approach the shore, they came down to the beach in great numbers, having a long knife in one hand, a spear headed with iron in the other, and a cressit or dagger by their side. They went on shore, however, notwithstanding these hostile appearances, and a treaty soon commenced; but all they could procure was about a dozen fowls, and a goat and
