REMARKS.

This is by far the moft general mode, including nearly all the fubftantives and adjectives in a and u, and holds good alfo in fuch diminutives as russa, a rope, ruffee, a cord; gola, a ball, golee a bullet; chooha, a rat; choohee, a moufe; huramzadu, huramzadee, rarely huram zadin, a bastard; as few fuch words have in, un, &c. for ee.

Sometimes chuchanee, and the feminine of moolla, is fortunately thus diftinguished better from moolee, a raddish; as a very small number of nouns in a, take nee.

Or any schoolmistress, likewife his fifter, daughter, &c. if old. See below, under the word buneea. And doolhun, feldom doolbee. In this way are formed from joolahá, a weaver; koonjra, a fruiterer; mirduha, a constable; and names of trades, tribes, in ha, la, ra; joolahin, joolahun, joolahee, his wife, &c..

Applicable alfo to the fifter, daughter, or to any female trader; and on the contrary the next word kubita,en often requires no other qualification, than being the wife, daughter, or sister of a bard; a circumstance that frequently occurs, from the Hindoo tribes being confined to particular trades or profeffions, and confequently applies to many of the prefent examples: but from these we muft except pun žita, below.

Kuferin, kuferun, kuferee, with the most of such nouns in era, as thut hera, fumpera, bhungera, have nee, in,

un, or ee.

Choube, chaubaen, names of braminical tribes; but pande has punden; a common irregularity that can easily

be accounted for and reconciled.

Dhobun, fometimes d'hobince; kufbee, means either a male or female artist, though now confined to courtezans, and occasionally becomes kufbin, like most masculines in ee. Mooftanee, mõõtin, and khutran, khutrin, are at times used; also quzee a en'from qazer. Adjectives in ee are alike in both genders; bura bharee foour, a very large boar; buree bharee foo,uree, a very large fow.

This is a Mŏŏfulman tribe. Dep, a god; de onee, a goddess; and according to the Hindoos, dewanguna. There are but few fuch nouns in o to require much attention.

Exhibits the various ways these words are formed; bindoo,aen, hindoo,anee, alfo are proper: baboo, a master, has bubwa,en, a mistress and from kandoo, a sugar-boiler, &c. come kandoonee, kandoo,anee, kundwa en, his wife, &c.

Perhaps more properly bhuw, and bhuwanie. See the notes pages 20 and 33, whence byshnuwee, a holy woman, is regular from byhnuv, or byfhnuw, pronounced byshnou.

The feminine here is often redundant, fonarin, fönarnee, fönaree, foo,urnee, foo urin, being all proper; but it is difficult to say when such words should have in, un, nee, ee: Practice and Vol. II. will however, fettle this point to the reader's satisfaction. Words in ar often have a en; fõna en, loha ̧en, chuma en, from fonar, lohar, chumar, instead of loharin, lokarun, loharee, loharnee..

The zubur being dropped (as e in tigrefs) in uttering moghal-anee, it becomes moghlance, a deviation that is too trifling to stand upon here, though its frequency be worth noting. Punditanee, likewise occurs, and Punita means a learned woman, v. na,ek, below.

Bufunt, the spring; prem, friendship; when proper names, take eea or ee for the feminine; and kureem, fuleem, uzeem, u, or un; kureemun, fuleemu, uzeemun, used also as diminutives; whence we may account for meerun, mooradun, &c. being applicable alfo to men.

Shair, a poet; fhajiru, a poetess; these are all Arabic words; but the distinction, as in English, is beginning to be disused, or is often neglected. When mulik fignifies a camel-keeper, it has mulika,en, mulikanee.

Very common in Sunfkrit words, pachuk, a man-cook, pachuka, a woman cook; Sewa, Juno; from Sea or Sew, Jupiter.

(s) The irregularities here, and elsewhere, may be partly accounted for by the transposition and converibility of letters, to which fo many words in this language are fubject.

RULE VIII.

Many inftances, as in other languages, will be found, where the difcrimi nation of fex depends on separate words, and not on the terminations at all; but where the diftinction is neither obvious nor neceffary, one word often expreffes both fexes, or has occafionally nurhe, added for the masculine, and madu ɔɔ she, for the feminine gender.
