4th. When oil of vitriol has been swallowed, water alone must by no means be used, on account of the excessive heat produced by the mixture; but it may be taken thickened with chalk, magnesia, or soap, or oil may freely be administered. When it has been spilt on the skin or clothes, tear off the clothes and wipe the skin, to free it as much as possible from the acid, before washing with water.

Another practitioner observes that, "when mineral poisons, technically called oxide, whether of copper or arsenic, are taken inwardly, one table spoonful of powdered charcoal is a complete antidote, mixed with either honey, butter, or treacle, taken immediately: within two hours administer either an emetic or a cathartic; in this case the effect of the poison is prevented."

DR. CLARKE, of Cambridge, has given the name of plutonium to the new metal which he has obtained by mixing barytes in a pure state with lamp oil, and then exposing it to the heat of an ignited gaseous mixture of the constituents of water; two parts of hydrogen gas by bulk, being mixed with one part of oxygen gas. He has also obtained metals from strontian and silex.

MR. EDWARD ROCHE, of Trabolgan, Ireland, desirous of introducing the patent lamp into general use in that part of the United Kingdom, has found means to improve rape oil by a simple process, which renders it equal to spermaceti for the purposes of illumination. He began by washing the oil with spring water, by shaking the former violently with a sixth part of the latter. By this operation the two substances are intimately commixed; if left at rest they separate completely again in less than 48 hours, the oil swimming at top, and the water with all the feculent and extraneous particles, subsiding to the bottom. Upon this method he improved much by substituting sea-water for fresh; the latter impregnated with salt is less fit for the purpose than sea-water, as the light is not so bright and of a reddish cast. Rape oil thus treated does not give out any bad smell, and is not to be distinguished from spermaceti. By the process of washing, the foil loses less than Mr. Roche intends to perform it in a churn, with a cock towards the bottom, the water to come up very near to the cock, by which all the oil can be drawn off after it has deposited its impurities.

COMMERCIAL REPORT.

The continued prevalence of wet weather has caused a further advance of full 20s. per quarter on all descriptions of grain, which has now attained a price that will render admissible all kinds of foreign grain after the 15th inst. At present this alteration in the price of grain has produced but a partial effect upon articles of commerce: Rice being in many places an article of common food, has experienced a corresponding advance in value to corn; and under the impression that distillation from grain will in general be suspended or abridged, all kinds of spirits have advanced 6d. to 7d. per gallon. Sugars had advanced 3s. to 5s. per cwt. in the course of the month, but have again declined, and, with every other article of merchandize remain with very little or no variation in price since the first of last month. The expectation of large importations of foreign grain has produced a temporary effect upon our exchanges, favourable to our export trade, in the proportion of about 5 to 8 per cent, but we consider this as temporary, because we are convinced that the importation of grain cannot be great, the harvest having proved more unfavourable in most parts of Europe thau in this country; so that we are now likely to be exporters rather than importers. Sensible of the conflicting opinions and painful impressions that an extreme high price of the necessaries of life produces on the minds of a great, portion of the public, we shall here offer our opinion, with our reason for giving it, not for the sake of the question itself, but as inseparably connected with our commercial operations, by way of shewing the effect it it is likely to produce both upon commerce and manufactures, which we are induced to believe will be favourable both to our internal and external relations, because it must be the means of encreasing a very extended reproductive capital. The wages of the labouring manufactu rer within the last twelve months, having been reduced to the lowest possible minimum, corresponding with the extreme depression iu value of agricultural products, a corresponding or perhaps a greater advance of the price of labour, will now immediately ensue, and place the labouring class of society in a better situation than as present, producing an increased activity through all the various occupations of labour, dealers, and merchants at home; and extending the operations of commerce to every part of the globe where our manufactures can be exchanged for articles of

food.
