PREFACE. THE Dictionary of Greek and Roman Geography edited by Dr. William Smith is a work of so much utility to the study of Ancient history, and of such general importance to classical education, and the progress of knowledge, that its extensive circulation wherever the English language is spoken or read may confidently be anticipated. I lose no time, therefore, in submitting to the Editor, some "Observations" suggestive of the propriety of his reconsidering a few of the articles, with a view to a second edition of his Dictionary. To these "Observations" I have added a Second Edition of a Paper "On the Greek Stade as a Linear Measure," which was published in 1839, in the Ninth Volume of the Journal of the Royal Geographical Society. |
