combination of vivid and original genius with the most correct and cultivated judgment. It has presented to its Author splendid opportunities for description, afforded by the rites and ceremonies of the Pagan and Catholic religions. It has exalted as well as enriched the poetry of its nation, and, as may even now and here be asserted, it is calculated to recall contemporary taste to the correct and established models of an older and more Augustan æra of literature.

The Publication will be comprised in Two Volumes Quarto, of which the first will contain the Works of the Earl of Surrey:

CONSISTING,

I. Of those Poems which were originally published by Tottell, iỷ 1557.— II. The Paraphrase of the Book of Ecclesiastes, and of some of the Psalms, together with his Satire against the Citizens of London, and several hitherto unpublished Poems. III. The Translation in Blank Verse, of the Second and Fourth Books of the Æneid.-IV. A large Collection of Original Letters, all from original MSS. chiefly from the State Paper Office, written by the Earl of Surrey, when he was Governor of Boulogne in 1545.-V. Memoirs of the Life of the Earl of Surrey; with a large Appendix of original Documents, from unpublished MSS. in the Archives at Norfolk House, the State Paper Office, and Public Offices of Record.

The whole will be accompanied with Notes, as well Critical as Explanatory, a general Critique on the Earl of Surrey's Writings; and an Account of the Literature of the Times in which he lived.

The Second Wolume will contain,

I. Sir Thomas Wyatt's Poems and Satires as published by Tottell, in the Songs and Sonnets in 1557.-II. His Paraphrase on the Seven Penitential Psalms. -III. A large Number of Poems unpublished from an highly valuable Manuscript in Sir Thomas Wyatt's own Hand Writing.IV. Sir Thomas Wyatt's Oration before the Privy Council.-V. His two Letters to his Son, mentioned by Ascham; from an Original Copy in his Son's Hand Writing.VI. A Series of his Original Letters and Dispatches during the Time he was Ambassador in the Court of Charles the Fifth.

The whole will be accompanied with Notes, as well Critical as Explanatory, du Historical Memoir of Sir Thomas Wyatt's Life.

The first Volume will be embellished with an highly finished Engraving by Scriven, of a Portrait of the Earl of Surrey, by Holbein, in his Majesty's Collection at Windsor, from a Drawing by Uwins: and the Second Volume, with an Engraving by the same Artist, from an Original Portrait of Sir Thomas Wyatt, by Holbe in. In each Volume Fac-similes of the Hand Writing of both Surrey and Wyatt will be given, from original Autographs.

The Work will be printed by BENSLEY, and the Number strictly limited to 50 Copie's on Royal Quarto, and 400 on Demy Quarto.
