in fhips of war, and that of Ruffia, in land forces; it is agreed, that, in cafe his Britannick Majefty fhould be attacked or disturbed in his kingdoms, provinces, ftates, or poffeffions, whatever, fo as to find it neceffary to require his ally's affiftance; her Imperial Majefty of all the Ruffias will fend him forthwith 10,000 infantry, and 2000 cavalry; which fuccours fhall be continued to him, on the part of her Imperial Majefty, during the whole time, that the said attack or disturbance fhall laft; and, on the other hand, in cafe her Imperial Majefty of all the Ruffias fhould be attacked or difturbed in her kingdoms, provinces, ftates, or poffeffions whatever, fo as to find it neceffary to require her ally's affiftance, his Britannick Majefty will fend her forthwith a fquadron of twelve men of war of the line, carrying 700 guns, according to the following lift; two fhips of 70 guns, making together 140 guns, and 960 men; fix fhips of 60 guns, making 3601 guns, and 2400 men; four fhips of 50 guns, making 200 guns, and 1200 men; in the whole 12 fhips, 700 guns;: and 4560 men. This fquadron fhall be duly fitted out, and armed for war. Which fuccour fhall be, in like manner, continued to her, during the whole time the faid attack or disturbance fhall laft.

V. But if the nature of the attack or invifion be fuch, that the party attacked, or invaded, fhould not find it fuitable to demand the specifick fuccours ftipulated in the preceding article, as not being proper for their defence; the faid high contracting parties, in order to give each other, in every thing, proofs of their fincere and friendly intentions towards each other, have agreed, by this article, that the faid cafe exifting, they fhall reciprocally fuccour each other, after requifition made, in the following manner; that is to fay, if his Britannick Majesty should find himfelf attacked, her Imperial Majefty of all the Ruffias fhall cause the fum of 500,000 roubles a year to be paid to him, during the whole time, that attack or trouble, which fhall have occafioned the faid demand on the part of his Britannick Majefty, fhall laft, in order to enable him to fupport the expences of the war; and if it was her Imperial Majefty of all the Ruffias who fhould be attacked, his Britannick Majefty fhall furnish her the

like fum of money yearly, as long as the attack or difturbance which fhall have occafioned this demand fhall Iaft.

VI. In cafe the party required, after having furnished the affiftance, ftipulated by the fourth article of this treaty, fhould be attacked themfelves, fo that it fhould be neceffary for them to recall their forces for their own fecurity, they fhall be at liberty to do it, two months after they fhall have duly apprized the party requiring thereof: and it is likewife ftipulated, that, in cafe the party required fhould, at the time of the requifition, find themselves involved in a war, fo that it fhould be abfolutely neceffary to keep at home, for their own fecurity and defence, fuch forces as they ought to furnish to their ally, by virtue of this treaty; when this cafe happens, the party required fhall be difpenfed with, for the time the faid neceffity fhall laft, from furnishing the above-mentioned

fuccour.

VII. The auxiliary troops of Ruffia fhall be provided with a field artillery of two three pounders for each battalion, and with warlike ftores; and fhall likewife be paid, replaced, and recruited by her Imperial Majefty of all the Ruffias: But his Britannick Majefty fhall furnish them the portions to wit, a pound of flesh per diem, bread, or, inftead of it, fixty pounds of rye flour per month, a pound. of falt, and four pounds of grots, per month, the weight reckoned upon the foot of Holland: and the rations of forage, cats, hay, &c. according to the Ruffian military eftablishment, and in Holland weight, as well as the neceffary quarters; the whole upon the fame foot, as those troops are used to be subsisted by her Imperial Majesty of all the Ruffias.

VIII. In cafe the faid Ruffian auxiliary troops, being demanded by his Britannick Majefty, were to march by land; as it might be indifpenfable for the faid troops. to pass through the dominions of fome other powers, his Britannick Majefty fhall take care to procure a free paf. fage for them, furnishing them with bread and forage, in the fame manner as it is ftipulated in the preceding article of this treaty and when they fhall have the fea to país, his Britannick Majefty fhall take upon himself, either to transport

transport them in his own fhips, or to furnish the expences of this tranfportation; which is likewife to be understood, as well with regard to the recruits, which her Imperial Majefty fhall be obliged to fend to the faid troops, according to the preceding article, as with regard to the return of thofe Ruffian troops, upon their being fent back by his Britannick Majefty, or recalled by her Imperial Majefty of all the Ruffias, for her own defence, according to the fixth article of this treaty. It is moreover ftipufated, that when the aforefaid troops fhall be either recalled or fent back, a fufficient convoy of men of war shall escort them for their fecurity."

IX. When the faid fuccours fhall be refpectively furnished, on the one fide or the other, though each commanding officer, either of the fquadron, which his Britannick Majefty is to furnish to Ruffia, or of the auxiliary troops of her Imperial Majefty of all the Ruffias, keeps the command he has been intrufted with; the general command fhall indifputably belong to him, whom the party requiring fhall name for that purpofe; upon condition, that nothing of importance fhall be undertaken, without its being previously examined and refolved upon in the council of war, and in the prefence of the general and commanding officers of the party required.

X. And that there may be no difficulty or miftake, with regard to rank and character, the party requiring fhall notify in time, what commander is to be employed for the command in chief, either of the fleet, or of the land forces; to the end that the partý required may fettle and proportion the rank and character of the perfon who fhall have the command of the auxiliary troops, or Thips.

XI. The auxiliary forces fhall have their own minif ters or preachers, and the free exercise of religion; and Thall not be tried upon whatever relates to the military fervice, but according to the laws, articles of war, and ordinances, of their own country. But if any disputes fhould arife between the officers or foldiers of the combined forces, they shall be examined and debated by commiffaries, in equal number, of both parties; and the offenders fhall be punished according to the articles of war of their

fovereign. In like manner the general, as well as the reft of the auxiliary forces, fhall be allowed to carry on a free correfpondence with their country, whether by letters or by expreffes.

XII. The auxiliary forces, on the one fide and on the other, fhall be kept together as far as that can be done; and in order that the faid refpective auxiliary forces may not be exposed to greater fatigues than the others, and that there may be an exact equality in all expeditions and operations; the general in chief fhall be obliged to obferve a juft proportion, in all the commands, according to the ftrength of the whole.fleet or army.

XIII. The fquadron of fhips which his Britannick Majefty is to furnish by virtue of this alliance, fhall be admitted in all the ports of her Imperial Majefty of all the Ruffias; where it fhall be treated in the most friendly manner, and provided with every thing it may ftand in need of, upon paying the fame price as is paid by the men of war of her Imperial Majefty of all the Ruffias; and the faid fquadron fhall be allowed to return, each year of the war, to the ports of Great Britain, as foon as the feafon will not permit them any longer to keep at fea; provided it be expreffly ftipulated, that, whenever the cafe of this treaty fhall exift, the fquadron his Britannick Majefty is to furnifh fhall arrive every year in the Baltick, about the beginning of the month of May; and fhall not leave that fea before the beginning of the month of October.

XIV. The party requiring, upon making the demand of the fuccour ftipulated by this treaty, fhall, at the fame time, acquaint the party required, with the place where it is intended the faid fuccour fhould forthwith repair; and the faid party requiring, fhall be at liberty to employ the aforefaid fuccour, during the whole time it fhall be con tinued to them, in fuch manner and fuch places as they fhall judge moft convenient for their fervice, against the aggreffor.

XV. It is agreed, that the cafe of this treaty of alliance fhall not be extended to the wars which may happen to arife between her Imperial Majefty of all the Ruffias, and the Ottoman Porte, or the Perfians, Tartars, or other

Eastern nations; his Britannick Majefty being to be dif pensed with, in any one of these cafes, from furnishing the fuccours ftipulated by this treaty as in like manner, on the other fide, her Imperial Majefty of all the Ruffias Thall not be obliged to furnish the fuccours ftipulated by this treaty, for the defence of his Britannick Majefty's poffeffions in America, or in any part whatsoever out of Europe.

XVI. It is also agreed, that, on account of the great distance of places, the troops which her Imperial Majefty of all the Ruffias fhall be to furnish, by virtue of this alliance, for the defence of his Britannick Majefty, fhall not be fent either into Spain, Portugal, or Italy.

XVII. If the fuccours, ftipulated in the fourth article of this treaty, are not fufficient; then the contracting parties fhall agree, without delay, about the farther fuccours, which they fhall give each other.

XVIII. If it thould happen, that they should be obliged to have recourfe to force of arms, neither peace nor truce fhall be made, without including therein fuch of the contracting parties as fhall not have been attacked; that they may fuffer no damage, in refentment for the fuccours they fhall have given to their ally.

XIX. The prefent defenfive alliance fhall be no obftacle to, nor in any wife derogate from, the treaties and alliances which the contracting parties may have with other Kings, Princes, or States, in fo far as the faid treaties fhall not be contrary to the present treaty, or to the friendship and good understanding which shall always be ftrictly obferved between them.

XX. Their faid Majefties have, moreover, agreed, that they fhall concert together about the admiffion of fach other powers as might be disposed to enter into this alliance.

XXI. The peace, friendship, and good understanding fhall laft for ever between the high contracting parties but as it is ufual to fix a certain time for treaties of formal alliance, the faid high contracting parties have agreed, that this one shall continue in force for the fpace of fifteen years, to be reckoned from the day of the figning of this treaty. XXII. This
