lately conquered from the Indians may be permitled to remain thereon until the same shall be exposed to public sale.

Ordered, That the said petitions be referred to the committee on Public Lands.

On motion of Mr. Scott.

Ordered, That the resolutions of the Legisla ture of the territory of Missouri, relating to the settlers on the public lands, presented on the 16th of February, 1816, be referred to the same committee.

Mr. Scott also presented a resolution of the Legislature of the said territory, soliciting that a road may be opened by the United States, from the town of St. Louis, to the nothern boundary of the State of Louisiana, by the post of Arkansas. Ordered, That the said resolution be referred to the committee on Roads and Canals.

On motion of Mr. Scott,

Ordered, That the resolutions of the Legisla ture of the Territory aforesaid, respecting certain Indian claims to lands, presented on the 16th of February, 1816, be referred to the Secretary of War.

Mr. Lattimore presented a petition of the Legislature of the Mississippi territory, praying that the Indian title to certain land in said territory may be extinguished, which was referred to the Secretary of War.

Mr. Lowndes, from the committee of Ways and Means, made a report respecting the subsistence of the army; which being read.

Mr. Lowndes reported a bill making a partial appropriation for the subsistence of the army daring the year 1817, which was read the first and sccond time, and committed to a committee of the whole House to-morrow.

Mr. Robertson, from the committee on the Public Lands, reported a bill making provision for the location of the lands reserved by the first article of the treaty of the 9th of August, 1814, between the United States, and the Creek nation, to certain chiefs and warriors of that nation, and for other purposes; which was read the first and second time, and committed to a committee of the whole House to-morrow.

The speaker laid before the House, a letter from the Secretary of the Navy, transmitting the annual list of the clerks, employed in the Navy Department during the year 1816, with the salary allowed to each which were ordered to lie on the table.

The Speaker also laid before the House, a letter from the Treasury Department enclosing a report and statement of loan-office and final settlement certificates issued under the authority of the continental Congress, which remain outstanding, made in obedience to a resolution of the 15th of April last, which were ordered to lie on the table.

On motion of Mr. Lattimore,

Resolved, That the committee on Pensions and Revolutionary Claims, be instructed to inquire into the expediency of placing on the pension list Levi Harris, and Charles Jordan, privates in the Jefferson troop of Mississippi dragoons.

On motion of Mr. Thoinas Wilson.

Resolved, That the committee on Pensions and Revolutionary Claims, be directed to inquire whether any, and if any, what further provision by law, is requisite to enable riding masters of the revolutionary war, to receive a bounty in land equal to that allowed to other officers of the same rank.

On motion of Mr. M·Lean,

Resolved, That the commitice on Post-Office and Post-Roads, be instructed to inquire into the expediency of establishing a post-road from Russellville, in Kentucky, to Hopkinsville, by Elkton and Ewingsville.

On motion of Mr. Hendricks,

Resolved, That the committee on the Post-Office and Post-Roads, be instructed to inquire into the expediency of establishing a post-route from Vincennes to Fort Harrison, all in the State of Indiana.

Resolved, That the said committee be instructed to inquire into the expediency of establishing a post-route, from Corydon, by the way of Troy, in the county of Perry; Darlington in the county of Warwick; Blackford in the county of Posey; to intersect the saline road fron Vincennes, near Codi's Ferry, on the Wabash, all in the State of Indiana.

On motion of Mr. King,

Resolved, That the committee on the Judiciary, be instructed to inquire into the expediency of providing by law, for holding annually, two terms of the circuit court of the United States, within the District of Maine, in Massachusetts.

On motion of Mr. Cannon,

The House proceeded to consider the resolution submitted by him on 27th ult., and the same being again read, was agreed to by the House.

Au engrossed bill entitled "An act for the relief of Henry Malcolm," was read the third time and passed.

Ordered, That the title be as aforesaid, and that the clerk carry the said bill to the Senate, and ask their concurrence therein.

The bill from the Senate, "to authorize a new edition of the collection of laws respecting the

public lands," was read the first and second time, and ordered to be read a third time to-morrow.

A message from the Senate, by Mr. Cutts, their Secretary:

Mr. Speaker-The Senate have passed bills of the following titles:

An act to increase the salaries of the register and receiver of public moneys of the land office, at Marietta ;

An act making a further appropriation for the purchase of books for the Library of Congress, and for other purposes; and

An act requiring the Directors of the Bank of the United States, to establish an office of discount and deposite in the District of Columbia; in which bills they request the concurrence of this House. And he withdrew.

The House resumed the consideration of the bill to amend the "act to authorize the payment for property lost, captured, or destroyed, by the enemy, while in the military service of the United States, and for other purposes."-And the question recurring on the amendment proposed by Mr. Johnson, of Ky. yesterday.
