PREFACE.

IN introducing this little volume to the notice of the public, the Author ventures to hope that as the subject is one in which all must feel interested, the manner in which it is treated may not at the same time prove unacceptable.

The object has been to speak of that feeling which glows and burns in every breast, in a manner suited to so important a subject—a passion which in all ages has kept predominant mastery of the human heart, and will do so

"Till time shall be no more."

It is Love which awakens the holiest and happiest thoughts, and makes life brightest and fairest. And who is there among the human family who has not loved? Love dawns freshly and beautifully upon the brow of youth; its lustre gilds and irradiates the meridian of life, and even the grey hairs of age are brightened by its beams.
