ANNUAL REPORT

Of Edward S. Fuller, an Inspector of Lumber for the County of Rensselaer.

The undersigned submits to the honorable body the Legislature of New-York, the following parcels of lumber measured and inspected by him, from 11th March, 1829, to the 4th of December, 1829, of which this is a true copy, viz:

REPORT, &c.

STATE OF NEW-YORK-SECRETARY'S OFFICE,

Albany, January 16, 1830.

The Secretary of State respectfully submits to the Legislature the report required of him as Superintendent of common schools.

The statute makes it the duty of the Superintendent to present to the Legislature an annual report, containing,

"1. A statement of the condition of the common schools of the State:

"2. Estimates and accounts of expenditures of the school monies. "3. Plans for the improvement and management of the common school fund, and for the better organization of the common schools; and,

"4. All such matters relating to his office and to the common schools, as he shall deem exepdient to communicate.”

I. As to the Condition of the Common Schools.

There are fifty-five organized counties, and seven hundred and seventy-three towns and wards, in the State. Returns have been received from all the county clerks, embracing the required reports of the commissioners of common schools from every town in the State.

An abstract of the returns from the several towns is given in the paper appended to this report, marked A. A general summary of this abstract, shewing the results in the several counties, is given in the paper marked B.

From these abstracts it will be seen that there are in the several towns of the State, 8,872 school districts organized, and that of this number, 8,292 have complied with the conditions of the statute, by having schools kept at least three months by an inspected teacher, and making returns to the commissioners.

That 263 new districts have been formed during the year ending on the first of January, 1829, and that the number of districts which
