PRICE 2s. LONDON: MOFFATT AND PAIGE, 28, WARWICK LANE, PATERNOSTER ROW, E.C. 1896. PREFACE. THIS edition of Milton's Samson Agonistes is intended specially for the use of students preparing for examinations. It is hoped, however, that it may be found useful and instructive to all readers who take an interest in the noble English literature of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It has been constructed on the same general plan as Moffatt's Plays of Shakespeare, which have proved widely acceptable to students and general readers. Derivations are given only in cases of particular interest or difficulty; words whose origin may be found in the etymological section of any good English Grammar have generally been left unnoticed. This extensive and important subject can be fully studied only in the admirable dictionaries of Professor Skeat and Dr. Murray. The specimens of Paraphrasing are put forward with great diffidence, not distinctively as models, but to afford young students some notion as to the mode of proceeding in an exercise about which, as we know from experience, many find special difficulty, chiefly through the want of a little friendly aid at the commenceSome practical general remarks on this subject will be found in Moffatt's edition of Bacon's Essays. ment. No work on Samson Agonistes can pretend to be exhaustive. For further comment students may be referred to the editions of Todd, Masson (Macmillan), Verity (Cambridge University Press), Percival (Macmillan), Wyatt (Univ. Corr. Coll. Press), and others. For the Life, Works, and Times of Milton they should consult Macaulay's famous Essay, Johnson's Life, and Masson's elaborate Life of Milton (Macmillan). The four or five pages on Milton at the end of Chapter VIII. of Green's Short History of the English People will also be found interesting and instructive. The student should also read, either in the original Greek, or in Dr. Butcher's excellent translation (Macmillan), the Poetics of Aristotle. 5 |
