ÉCOLE FRANÇAISE. JOS. VERNET. MUSÉE FRANÇAIS. En 1524, Toulon était encore sans défense et le connétable de Bourbon s'en empara facilement, lors de sa révolte contre le roi François Ier. En 1536, Charles V reprit encore cette ville; cependant des fortifications ayant été élevées depuis, elle soutint le siége que vint faire le duc de Savoie, Charles-Emmanuel Ier., en 1590.Le prince Eugène vint encore l'assiéger en 1707, mais il échoua dans son entreprise. Enfin, en 1793, nous avons vu les Anglais s'en emparer; ils n'y restèrent que peu de temps, et c'est lors de sa reprise par l'armée française que le jeune Bonaparte fit ses premières armes sous le général Dugommier. Le port neuf est l'ouvrage de Louis XIV, qui fit construire en même temps tout ce qui était nécessaire, pour rendre ce port le plus important de tous, comme arsenal de la marine. On admire surtout la corderie, construite sur les dessins de Vauban. Joseph Vernet semble avoir voulu faire connaître dans ce tableau la haute importance du parc d'artillerie et de tous les travaux qui s'y exécutent. Le port occupe le fond du tableau, cette partie est d'un ton argentin très-vaporeux, qui contraste agréablement avec les objets placés sur le devant. Ce tableau fut peint en 1755, ainsi que tous les autres ports. de cette suite. Ils ont tous été gravé par Cochins et Le Bas. Larg., 8 pieds; haut 5 pieds. FRENCH SCHOOL. ******** JOS. VERNET. FRENCH MUSEUM. 00. THE NEW PORT OF TOULON. Even in 1524 Toulon was without defence, and the High Constable de Bourbon, easily possessed himself of it, at the time of its revolt under King Francis the first. In 1536 Charles 5th. again took the City, but fortifications having been afterwards erected, it sustained a siege from the Duke of Savoy, Charles Emmanuel the 1 st, in 1590. Prince Eugene again besieged it in 1707 but failed in his enterprise. At length, in 1793 the English possessed themselves of it, but they retained it but a short period, and it was, (at its retaking by the French army,) that young Buonaparte made his first essay in arms, under General Dugommier. The new harbour is the work of Louis the 14 th, who erected at the same time all that was necessary to render this port superior to the others, as a marine arsenal, the ropeyard of which, erected from the design of Vauban, is particularly worthy of admiration. The artist appears to have been desirous of shewing the high importance of a park of artillery, and of all the works carrying on there. The harbour occupies the background of the picture; this part is of a vapourous silverish colour which contrasts agreeably with the objects placed in front. This picture was painted in 1755, as well as all the other ports in succession, and as been engraved by Cochins and Le Bas. Breadth, 8 feet 6 iuches; heigth, 5 feet 4 iuches. |
