It was from the design of Charles Le Brun, that Girardon executed this magnificient tomb in marble: the figure of the Cardinal is presented to view, half reclined, and sustained by religion. At his feet is seen History dejected, and deploring the death of this able Minister, who conducted the affairs of France with such energy.

This work which is of fine execution, was placed in one of the chapels of the church of the Sorbonne, built at the expense of the Cardinal. At the time of the destruction of the churches in 1793, some of the revolutionary army, wishing to insult the memory of the Prelate, partly mutilated the face, and the nose of the Cardinal was broken by a thrust from a bayonet, on which occasion M. Le Noir was wounded in the hand, whilst endeavouring to prevent this outrage.

This tomb was afterwards removed to the museum of the convent des Petits-Augustins; since the return of Louis the eighteenth is has been replaced, like many others, in its original situation.

The four fronts of this monument, have been engraved by Charles Simoneau.

Length 14 feet 9 inches; breath 6 feet 1 inch.
