PSALM VI. Domine, ne in furore (-miserere).

O LORD, rebuke me not in thine indignation: neither chasten me in thy displeasure.

2 Have mercy upon me, O LORD, for I am weak: O LORD, heal me, for my bones are vexed.

9

For there is no stedfastness in their mouth.

10 Lit. They make smooth their tongue, (i. e. flatter). Verse 6. "Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit " Rom. 3:13.

II Let them fall by their own counsels. "One told David, saying, Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom. And David said, O LORD, I pray thee, turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness" 2 Sam. 15:31. "The great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night" Rev. 12:9,10.

12 Lit. Let them ever shout for joy, and do thou defend them: let them also that love thy Name rejoice in thee. "That they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves" S. Jo. 17:13. "They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death. Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them" Rev. 12:11, 12.

13 Lit. For thou, O LORD, dost bless the righteous; with favour dost thou compass him as with a shield.

PSALM 6.

For the Chief Musician. With stringed instruments. On the lower octave.

First Penitential Psalm.

Absalom's Rebellion.

Enemies upbraiding him with past guilt.

DAVID IS CHRIST IN THAT "THE LORD HATH LAID ON HIM THE INIQUITY OF US ALL". Is. 53:6.

I Nearly the same as Ps. 38:1. Neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure. "Fear thou not, O Jacob my servant, saith the LORD: for I am with thee; for I will make a full end of all the nations whither I have driven thee: but I will not make a full end of thee, but correct thee in measure; yet will I not leave thee wholly unpunished" Jer. 46:28. "O LORD, correct me, but with judgment; not in thine anger, lest thou bring me to nothing Jer. 10:24:

2 "Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses" S. Mat. 8:17. "Strength is made perfect in weakness" 2 Cor. 12:9.

8 Plain, lit. straight. 11 Destroy, lit. punish. Ungodliness, -K. J. transgressions. Ahithophel fell by his own counsels. 2 Sam. 17:23. First imprecatory passage. See Ps. 109. 13 The Gk. version reads,-" With the shield of thy loving-kindness thou hast crowned us."

3 My soul also is sore troubled : but, LORD, how long wilt thou punish me?

4 Turn thee, O LORD, and deliver my soul: O save me, for thy mercy's sake.

5 For in death no man remembereth thee and who will give thee thanks in the pit?

6 I am weary of my groaning : every night wash I my bed: and water my couch with my tears.

7 My beauty is gone for very trouble and worn away because

of all mine enemies.

8 Away from me, all ye that work vanity for the LORD hath heard the voice of my weeping. 9 The LORD hath heard my petition: the LORD will receive my prayer.

10 All mine enemies shall be confounded, and sore vexed: they shall be turned back, and put to shame suddenly.

them that persecute me, and deliver me;

35:17

3 But thou, O LORD, how long?" See if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow, which is done unto me, wherewith the LORD hath afflicted me in the day of his fierce anger" Lam. 1:12. "Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say?" S. Jo. 12:27. "He hath made him to be sin

for us, who knew no sin" 2 Cor. 5:21.

5 'The grave" (i. e. Sheol) "cannot praise thee, death can not celebrate thee: they that go down into the pit cannot hope for thy truth" Is. 38:18.

6 Make I my bed to swim.

7 Mine eye is consumed because of grief; it waxeth old because of all mine enemies.

8 Depart from me all ye workers of iniquity. "Then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity" S. Mat. 7:23. See S. Lu. 13:27; S. Mat. 25:41. "I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears" Is. 38:5.

PSALM 7.

A Hymn of David, which he sang unto the LORD on account of the words of Cush the Benjamite.

This psalm probably belongs to the period of 2 Sam. 7. Suffering under calumny. God the righteous Judge. CHRIST AS HE SPEAKS THIS PSALM IN THE PERSON OF HIS FAITHFUL DISCIPLES, IS DESCRIBED IN THE WORDS OF THE PROPHET," HE PUT ON RIGHTEOUSNESS AS A BREASTPLATE, AND AN HELMET OF SALVATION UPON HIS HEAD; AND HE PUT ON THE GARMENTS OF VENGEANCE." Is. 59:17.

I Lit. O LORD, my God, in thee do I take refuge.

2 Lest he tear my soul like a lion, rending it in pieces, while there is none to deliver. "Your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour" 1 S. Pet. 5:8.

2 Vexed, lit. terrified. Sore troubled, in v. 3, is the same word in Heb. 3 "Wilt thou punish me;" these words are not in the Heb., or other versions. 5 Pit, lit. Sheol, the under world, the place where the spirits of the dead are gathered; and so regarded with horror. 8 David here turns, and with faith in God challenges his enemies. 8-9 Notice the three-fold repetition; The LORD hath heard, The LORD hath heard, The Lord will receive. 10 vexed; same Heb. word as in vv. 2, 3.

Ps. VII. The word rendered "Hymn" is in Heb. Shiggaion, which "probably means a psalm with music expressive of strong emotion."-Dr. Pusey. Cush the Benjamite is not mentioned elsewhere. "Enigmatical name for Shimei, who in 2 Sam. 16:11, is 'this Benjamite.""-Dr. Kay. See 2 Sam. 16:5-8. I Persecute, i. e. pursue. See vv. 5,
