PSALM 46.

The psalm probably refers historically to the Assyrian invasion of Sennacherib. 2 Kin. 19:35; 2 Chr. 32:21, 22. The Church's trust in the Lord in "all dangers and necessities."

CHRIST THE DEFENDER OF HIS CHURCH.

I Lit. God is a refuge and stronghold for us, he is very surely found a help in distress. Verses 7, 11. See 2 Chr.

15:4.

2 Lit. Therefore do we not fear, though the earth should change, (i. e. its condition, or aspect). See Is. 54:10.

3 Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah. Peace of Sion in God's abiding presence, and discomfiture of her foes. vv. 4-7.

4 Lit. There is a river, the streams whereof make glad the city of God. "He shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb" Rev. 22:1.
