"The loftiness of man shall be bowed down, and the haughtiness of men shall be made low: and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day" Is. 2:17. II Selah. Verses 1, 7.

PSALM 47.

For the Chief Musician. A Psalm of the Sons of Korah. The occasion of this psalm was probably the great deliverance of Israel from the Moabites and Ammonites recorded in 2 Chr. 20:1-30.

All nations called upon to praise Christ as their King.
TRIUMPH OF CHRIST.

I Shout unto God with the voice of triumph. Verse 5. 2 For the LORD most high is terrible; he is a great King over all the earth. Ps. 98. "The LORD thy God is among you, a mighty God and terrible" Deut. 7:21. See 2 Chr. 20:6. "The fear of God was on all the kingdoms of those countries, when they had heard that the LORD fought against the enemies of Israel " 2 Chr. 20:29. "He hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS" Rev. 19:16.

3 "Ye shall not need to fight in this battle: set yourselves, stand ye still, and see the salvation of the LORD with you, O Judah and Jerusalem: fear not, nor be dismayed; to morrow go out against them: for the LORD will be with you 2 Chr. 20:17.

4 Lit. He chose for us our inheritance, the excellency of Jacob whom he loved. Selah.

5 God is gone up with a shout, the LORD with the sound of a trumpet. Verse 1. "They came to Jerusalem with psalteries and harps and trumpets unto the house of the LORD" 2 Chr. 20:28.

6 Ps. 150. "And the Levites, of the children of the Kohathites, and of the children of the Korhites, stood up to praise the LORD God of Israel with a loud voice on high" 2 Chr. 20:19. See 2 Chr. 20:21.

7 See Zech. 14:9; 1 Cor. 14:15.

9 Lit. The princes of the peoples are gathered together, as a people of the God of Abraham: for the shields of the earth belong unto God: he is greatly exalted. "It shall come, that I will gather all nations and tongues; and they shall come, and see my glory " Is. 66:18.

Ps. XLVII. Some consider the occasion of this psalm to be the bringing up of the Ark to Zion (2 Sam. 6:15). Title. Sons of Korah; see Ps. 42, title, n. 3 Shall subdue; lit. subdued. 4 Excellency of Jacob; i. e. the Holy Land. 8 Seat, K. J. throne. 9 Shields, i. e. rulers; see Hos. 4:18 (marg.).

PSALM XLVIII.

Magnus Dominus.

GREAT is the LORD, and highly to be praised in the city of our 87:2 96:4 God, even upon his holy hill. 2 The hill of Sion is a fair 68:15,16 place, and the joy of the whole 78:69 87:1 earth: upon the north side lieth 133:34 the city of the great King: God 46:5 is well known in her palaces as a sure refuge.

137:1,5,6

44:1 46:1

3 For lo, the kings of the earth: are gathered, and gone by together.

4 They marvelled to see such things they were astonished, and suddenly cast down.

5 Fear came there upon them; and sorrow as upon a woman in her travail.

6 Thou shalt break the ships of the sea : through the east-wind. 7 Like as we have heard, so 69:36 have we seen in the city of the 127:1 LORD of hosts, in the city of our God: God upholdeth the same for ever.

The general occasion of this psalm is probably the same as that of the preceding. It may have been designed as a Thanksgiving in the Temple after the return to Jerusalem. Beauty and Security of the City of God.

CHRIST THE PROTECTOR OF HIS CHURCH.

I "And they came to Jerusalem with psalteries and harps and trumpets unto the house of the LORD" 2 Chr. 20:28. "In the last days it shall come to pass, that the mountain of the house of the LORD shall be established in the top of the mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills; and people shall flow unto it" Mic. 4:1.

2 Beautiful for situation, the joy of the whole earth, is mount Zion, on the sides of the north, the city of the great King. Lit. God hath made himself known in her palaces for a refuge.

4 Lit. They saw (i. e. Jerusalem); immediately they were amazed; they were terrified, they fled.

5 Fear took hold upon them there, and pain, as of a woman in travail.

6 Thou breakest the ships of Tarshish with an east wind. "Jehoshaphat made ships of Tarshish to go to Ophir for gold: but they went not; for the ships were broken at Ezion-geber" Kin. 22:48. See 2 Chr. 20:35-37..

9 From the rising of the sun even unto the going down of the same my name shall be great among the Gentiles; and in every place incense shall be offered unto my name, and a pure offering" Mal. 1:11.

Ps. XLVIII. Title. Sons of Korah; see Ps. 42, title, n. 2 The joy of the whole earth; these words are quoted in Lam. 2:15. Situation, lit. elevation.
