14 Lit. Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: that my tongue may sing of thy righteousness. "Set ye Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle, and retire ye from him, that he may be smitten, and die " 2 Sam. 11:15.

15 O Lord, open thou my lips.

16 For thou desirest not sacrifice; that I should give it. "To do justice and judgment is more acceptable to the LORD than sacrifice" Prov. 21:3. To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? saith the LORD: I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he goats 15 Is. 1:11. "I spake not unto your fathers, nor commanded them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices: but this thing commanded I them, saying, Obey my voice, and ye shall be my people " Jer. 7:22, 23.

17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit. "A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench" Is. 42:3. "Thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit" Is. 57:15. "To this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word" Is. 66:2.

Concluding prayer for the Church at large. vv. 18, 19. 18 Do good in thy good pleasure unto Zion. "Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ" S. Pet. 2:5.

19 Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, with burnt offering and whole burnt offering: then shall they offer young bullocks upon thine altar. Christ hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour" Eph. 5:2. "In the midst of the throne stood a Lamb as it had been

slain" Rev. 5:6. "He shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver that they may offer unto the LORD an offering in righteousness. Then shall the offering of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasant unto the LORD, as in the days of old, and as in former years" Mal. 3:3, 4.

14 "Deliver me from blood-guiltiness"; i. e. injury to

souls as well as to bodies. "Whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea" S. Mat. 18:6. "I am pure from the blood of all men. For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God" Acts 20:26, 27. 16 David offered no sacrifice for this sin. 17 Collect for Ash-Wednesday. Hy. 69. Hy. A. & M. 244. 18 Collects for Good Friday.

DELIVERANCE

FROM THE

PERSECUTIONS

OF THE WICKED, AND THEIR PUN-
ISHMENT. (LII-LX.)

PSALM 52.

For the Chief Musician. A song of Instruction of David, when Doeg the Edomite went and told Saul, and said to him, David is gone into the house of Abimelech, 1 Sam. 22:9.

THE TRIUMPH OF CHRIST AND HIS CHURCH OVER THE PERSECUTOR AND FALSE ACCUSER..

I Why boastest thou thyself in mischief, O mighty man? 2 Ps. 145. "It is of the LORD's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning" Lam. 3:22, 23.

3 Thy tongue deviseth mischiefs; like a sharp razor, working deceitfully. Verse 5.. "When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it" S. Jo. 8:44.

4 Thou lovest evil more than good; and lying rather than to speak righteousness. Selah.

5 Thou lovest all devouring words, O thou deceitful tongue. Verse 3.

6 Selah.

4-6 "Then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, and with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth that they might be saved" 2. Thess.

2:8-10.

7 The righteous also shall see, and fear, and shall laugh at him. "Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye holy apostles and prophets; for God hath avenged you on her " Rev.

18:20.

8 "Jesus saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God!" S. Mar. 10:24. "" Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not high-minded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God 1 Tim. 6:17.

Io I will praise thee for ever, because thou hast done it. Lit. And I will wait on thy Name in the presence of thy beloved, for it is good. "In the way of thy judgments, Ŏ LORD, have we waited for thee; the desire of our soul is to thy name" Is 26:8. "Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night. And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony" Rev. 12:10, 11.

PSALM LIII. Dixit insipiens.

THE foolish body hath said in` his heart: There is no God.

2 Corrupt are they, and become abominable in their wickedness: there is none that doeth good.

3 God looked down from heaven upon the children of men: to see if there were any that would understand, and seek after God.

4 But they are all gone out of the way, they are altogether become abominable: there is also none that doeth good, no not one.

5 Are not they without understanding that work wickedness : eating up my people as if they would eat bread? they have not called upon God.

6 They were afraid where no fear was for God hath broken the bones of him that besieged thee; thou hast put them to confusion, because God hath despised them.

7 Oh, that the salvation were given unto Israel out of Sion: Oh, that the Lord would deliver his people out of captivity!

8 Then should Jacob rejoice: and Israel should be right glad.
