PSALM XII.

Rom. Asc.,

Salvum me fac

(Domine).

HELP me, LORD, for there is not one godly man left: for the faithful are minished from among the children of men.

Ps. XI. 4 The first half of the verse is repeated in Hab. 2:20. 5 His eyelids try; the partial closing of the eyelids in reflective scrutiny. 6 "Alloweth " is used in the sense of approving after trial. 7 All Scripture figures retribution as burning. Engedi, one of David's hiding places, overlooked the site of Sodom and Gomorrah. Shall rain, lit. let him rain.

2 Lit. They have made ready their arrow upon the string, that they may privily shoot at the upright of heart. And the chief priests and scribes sought how they might kill him; for they feared the people. Then entered Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve. And he went his way, and communed with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray him unto them" S. Lu.

22: 2-4.

3 If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do? "Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again?" S. Jo. 11: 8.

I-3

"On the Lord my soul depending
Smiles to hear the taunting cry,
-To thy shelt' ring hills ascending
Tim'rous bird, make haste and fly!
-So the wicked culls his quiver,
Bends his bow, and points his dart:
From the haunts where none deliver,
Aiming at the upright heart.

When the ancient pillars tremble,

Where shall still the righteous cling?"

Bp. Geo. Burgess.

4 Lit. The LORD, in heaven is his throne. "Behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne" Kev.

4: 2.

His eyes behold, his eyelids try, the children of men. The LORD trieth the righteous: but the wicked and him that loveth violence his soul hateth. "Shall I not visit for these things? saith the LORD and shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?" Jer. 5: 9. "He knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold" Job 23: 10.

7 And a burning tempest: this shall be the portion of their cup: Cont. Pss. 16: 6; 23: 5. "The LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven" Gen. 19: 24.
