God speaks, reminding His people of past benefits, and promising them if obedient, His continued

protection. vv. 6-17.

This verse probably refers both to the Feast of Trumpets on the first of the Seventh Month, and the Feast of Tabernacles, from the fifteenth to the twenty-first or twenty-second. See Lev. 23:23-25; Num. 29:1, 12. 5 "There I heard for the first time the voice of God, which I knew not, speaking cn Sinai."-Hupfeld. 6 The literal rendering of the latter part of this verse may be,-His hands passed from the basket, i. e. were delivered from toiling with the burden-basket. "In this basket the Israelites conveyed clay, or baked bricks; it was suspended from each end of a yoke laid across the shoulder."-Jennings and Lowe. There may however be a reference to the earthen pot, alluding to the work in clay which the Israelites were compelled to perform.

PSALM LXXXII. Deus stetit.

GOD standeth in the congregation of princes: he is a Judge among gods.

15 Lit. Quickly would I bow down their enemies, and upon their adversaries would I turn my hand.

16 Lit. The haters of the LORD would feign submission to him (i. e. Israel), that so their time (i. e. Israel's) might be for ever.

PSALM 82.

A Psalm of Asaph.

This psalm may have been written in the reign of Jehoshaphat. See 2 Chr. 19:5-11.

CHRIST THE RIGHTEOUS JUDGE. See Ps. 72:1-4.

Lit. God standeth in the assembly of God; in the midst of gods doth he judge.

"The LORD your God is God of gods, and Lord of lords, a great God, a mighty, and a terrible, which regardeth not persons, nor taketh reward: he doth execute the judgment of the fatherless and widow, and loveth the stranger, in giving him food and raiment" Deut. 10:17, 18. "Rob not the poor, because he is poor: neither oppress the afflicted in the gate: for the LORD will plead their cause, and spoil the soul of those that spoiled them " Prov. 22:22, 23.

The LORD will enter into judgment with the ancients of his people, and the princes thereof: for ye have eaten up the vineyard; the spoil of the poor is in your houses. PSALM LXXXIII. Deus, quis similis ?

HOLD not thy tongue, O God, keep not still silence: refrain not thyself, O God.

2 For lo, thine enemies make a murmuring: and they that hate thee have lift up their head. 3 They have imagined craftily against thy people and taken counsel against thy secret ones. 4 They have said, Come, and let us root them out, that they be no more a people: and that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance.

PSALM 83.

A Song. A Psalm of Asaph.

This psalm may be referred to the invasion of enemies in the reign of Jehoshaphat. See 2 Chr. 20:5-14.

JUDGMENT INVOKED UPON THE FOES OF CHRIST, AND HIS CHURCH.

Israel's foes gather against her from every

quarter. vv. 1-8.

1 Keep not thou silence, O God: hold not thy peace, and be not still, O God.

3 Lit. They take crafty counsel against thy people, and consult against thy hidden ones.
