PSALM 117.

A Doxology.

All nations invited to praise the LORD of Mercy and Truth.

I Lit. O praise the LORD, all ye nations; celebrate him, all ye peoples. "Now I say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers: and that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy; as it is written

Praise the Lord, all ye Gentiles; and laud him, all ye people" Rom. 15:8, 9, 11. "Rejoice, O ye nations, with his people: for he will be merciful unto his land, and

to his people" Deut. 32:43.

2 Lit. For his loving-kindness is mighty over us, and the truth of the LORD is for ever. Hallelujah. See S. Lu. 1:78, 79: "Grace and truth came by Jesus Christ" S. Jo. 1:17. "We know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life" 1 S. Jo.

PSALM 118.

Probably composed either for the Dedication of the Second Temple (Ezra 6:15-22), or for the great Feast of Tabernacles after the completion of this Temple (Neh. 8:1318).

The "Hosanna." A Song of Thanksgiving for great deliverance.

CHRIST SUFFErs from the MALICE OF ENEMIES (vv. 10-13), AND RISES FROM THE DEAD (vv. 17-19). HIS RESURRECTION-DAY (V. 24).

2 Let Israel now say, that his mercy endureth for ever. 5 Lit. Out of straitness I called upon Jah, and Jah heard me in an open place, (i. e. heard me by bringing me into a wide open space).

6 The LORD is for me; I will not fear: what can man do unto me? Quoted in Heb. 13:6. Verses 7, 13. "What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?" Rom. 8:31.

God a Saviour in peril of death. VV. 15-21.

15 The voice of rejoicing and salvation is in the tents of the righteous: the right hand of the LORD doeth valiantly. "The children of Israel, the priests, and the Levites, and the rest of the children of the captivity, kept the dedication of this house of God with joy" Ezra 6:16.

16 The right hand of the LORD is exalted: the right hand of the LORD doeth valiantly. "Thy right hand, O LORD, is become glorious in power: thy right hand, O LORD, hath dashed in pieces the enemy. Thou stretchedst out thy right hand, the earth swallowed them" Ex. 15:6, 12.

This is a virtual acknowledgment that Cyrus had been but an instrument in God's hands for the deliverance of Israel, and that it was to God, not to any Chaldean, Median, or Persian sovereign courted apart from Him, that they would have to look for a revival of their former national prosperity." 19 Gates of righteousness; i. e. of the Temple. 22 No passage in the Old Testament is quoted so often in the New as this. "As the corner-stone of Solomon's temple was a type of Israel, so was Israel in turn a type of Christ, in Whom in due time all the promises were to culminate; Who in spite of His rejection by the unbelieving builders of His own nation, was yet, to the astonishment of all, to issue forth triumphant from the sepulchre of death wherein He had been laid, the chief corner-stone of the new universal household and temple of God."-Thrupp. "Two images appear to be used in Holy Scripture, both of which meet in Christ: the one, in which the stone spoken of is the foundation-stone; the other, in which it is the head corner-stone binding the two walls together, which it connects. Both were cornerstones; the one at the base, the other at the summit. In Isaiah (28:16) the whole emphasis is on the foundation; Behold Me Who have laid in Zion a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner-stone, well-founded. In the Psalm, the building had been commenced; those who were building had disregarded and despised the stone, but it became the head
