II They lie waiting in our way on every side: turning their eyes down to the ground;

12 Like as a lion that is greedy of his prey and as it were a lion's whelp lurking in secret places.

3 Lit. Thou hast proved mine heart; thou hast visited me by night; thou hast tried me without finding anything (i. e. any dross). If I think evil, it doth not pass my mouth (or, my thinking doth not go beyond my mouth). Ps 15. "He knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold" Job 23:10.

4 Concerning the works of men, by the word of thy lips I have kept me from the paths of the destroyer.

5 Lit. My steps held fast to thy paths, my footsteps have not tottered. "My foot hath held his steps, his way have I kept, and not declined" Job 23:11.

6 Lit. For thou answerest me. "I knew that thou hearest me always" S. Jo. 11:42. "This is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us" i S. Jo. 5:14. See Jer. 29:12.

7 Lit. From those that rise up against thy right hand. 8 Lit. Keep me as the little man, the daughter of the eye. "He kept him as the apple of his eye. As an eagle -fluttereth over her young, spreadeth abroad her wings,-so the LORD alone did lead him " Deut. 32:10-12. He that toucheth you toucheth the apple of his eye Zech. 2:8. "A full reward be given thee of the LORD God of Israel, under whose wings thou art come to trust" Ruth 2:12. 9 Lit. From the ungodly who would destroy me, from my deadly enemies who compass me about (or, from my enemies who eagerly compass me about). 'Saul and his men compassed David and his men round about to take them" I Sam. 23:26.

II Lit. Our steps they have now surrounded; their eyes do they set to cast us down to the earth.

12 Lit. His likeness is a lion that is greedy to tear in pieces.

3 Tried, i. e. tested as in a refiner's fire.

5 Hy. A. & M. 282. 8 There is a climax of delicate tenderness in the language here. Keep me as the little image (reflected in the pupil), yea, as a daughter of the eye. Under, lit. in.

13 Up, LORD, disappoint him, and cast him down: deliver my soul from the ungodly, which is a sword of thine;

the men of thy hand, O LORD, from the men, I say, and from the evil world: which have their portion in this life, whose bellies thou fillest with thy hid treasure.

PSALM 18.

For the Chief Musician. (A Psalm) of David, the servant of the LORD, who spake unto the LORD the words of this song in the day that the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul: And he said.

(This psalm probably belongs to the period of 2 Sam. 7). THE SONG OF THE REDEEMED VICTORIOUS IN THE RISEN CHRIST.

I Verses 31, 47,

And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us, in the house of his servant David" S. Lu. 1:69. 2 "Whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord, shall be saved" Acts 2:21.

4 S. Peter says of Christ, "Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it" Acts 2:24.

16 "It is not the image within us, but the shining in from without of God's image, (which is Christ), that will satisfy us at the Resurrection morning, the same image which the disciples beheld on the Mount of Transfiguration."-Dean Goulburn. See same word in the Heb. in Num. 12:8. The Gk. translation has,-" I shall be filled with the sight of thy glory."

Ps. XVIII. Title; servant of the LORD; see Ps. 36, title; Pss. 78:71; 89:3, 21; 132:10; 144:10; 2 Sam. 7:19-29. Comp. Rom. 1:1; S. Jas. 1:1; 2 S. Pet. 1:1; S. Jude 1:1; Rev. 1:1. This psalm, except its first sentence, forms the 22d chap. of 2 Sam. I ''My rock' is a title much used by David, perhaps suggested by the fastnesses amid which he passed his hunted life, to express that not in them but in his God was his safety "-Dr. Pusey. Defence, might, refuge; K. J, fortress, rock (marg.), high tower. Buckler; a small shield. Horn, a natural symbol of power and honour. In the Liturgy of S. Chrysostom, the priest when he kisses the elements, repeats this verse secretly thrice. "Sorrows" and also "pains" in the next verse are the same word in Heb., and literally signify "cords " or "bands," expressing a state of utter helplessness. 4 Hell, lit. Sheol; see Ps. 6:5, n.
