able to keep the work within a narrow compass, some specimens only, gathered out of an extensive field, must now suffice. Most, however, of the leading aspects of religion, practically considered, will be found exhibited in the following pages.

The method adopted has been to bring out in each chapter some important element in vital godliness, and then, by associating with it some illustrious name in the annals of our modern church, to afford a proof and illustration of its actual existence and eminent power. The reader, then, will not expect to find anything like complete biographies of the persons named, or even full-length portraits of their spiritual excellence. Features are only roughly sketched, for the purpose of conveying some idea of the habitual cast and expression of the spiritual countenance. The ultimate object of the author, it need scarcely be said, is to stimulate to imitation, and to lead the mind to those evangelical principles of character, and that Divine source

of abundant grace, by which alone true imitation can be produced and maintained.

To the blessing of Him who kindled these "Lights in the World," this attempt to diffuse their illumination is humbly and devoutly commended.
