[11] Disposition of energy to the purchasing public.-Energy supplied to public and private consumers and energy used by group companies in railway operation amounted, in 1929, to 808,551,133 kilowatt-hours, or about 1 percent of all energy consumed in the United States amounting to 80,966,731,882 kilowatt-hours. This amount was also 4.65 percent of the 17,389,287,841 kilowatt-hours consumed in the four States where group companies reported sales to the public, namely, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio.

Sales by group companies in Indiana greatly exceeded sales in the other three States, amounting to 801,516,940 kilowatt-hours, or 37.81 percent of all energy consumed in the State, and to 99.13 percent of total sales by the group.

The following tabular statement shows detailed figures for all States and classifications, for 1929.

[13] Interstate movement of electric energy.-Electric energy moved across State lines by companies in the Midland United Co. group, in 1929, amounted to 228,432,860 kilowatt-hours, or 1.78 percent of the interstate movement in the United States amounting to 12,824,443,952 kilowatt-hours, and 19.11 percent of the net total available by the group of 1,195,385,942 kilowatt-hours.

In 1930, interstate business by the group increased nearly 15 percent, or, to a total quantity of 262,430,318 kilowatt-hours. This increase, combined with a decrease in the total quantity of energy available in 1930, resulted in the interstate business reaching nearly one-quarter of the total quantity available.

The largest movement of energy across State lines by individual companies, in 1929, was the 84,861,312 kilowatt-hours reported by Interstate Public Service Co., with Northern Indiana Public Service Co. reporting the next largest quantity, 71,632,024 kilowatt-hours. In 1930, this latter company had the largest interstate movement when the quantity increased to 117,337,250 kilowatt-hours. The second largest quantity reported was by Public Service Co. of Indiana, successor to Interstate Public Service Co. which ranked first in 1929. Energy reported sent or received over State lines by the new company declined to 76,513,086 kilowatt-hours.

In both 1929 and 1930, the movement of energy interstate was almost entirely with companies not affiliated with the group.

Table 3, on the following page, shows the details concerning the quantities above discussed, as well as additional data regarding the interstate business of the group.
