Then the Candidates shall together, but each of them distinctly and audibly, repeat the following Prayer and Vow of Dedication:

[ocr errors]

LORD GOD, heavenly Father, Thou hast made us and fashioned us; Thou hast continually sustained our souls in life; by Thee we have been redeemed from everlasting death; Thou hast brought us into the number of Thy holy flock, and made us partakers of Thy Divine and Blessed Spirit: Thou art our Lord, our Master, and our God; it is our glory and our blessedness to serve and to obey Thee. And now, O Lord, we come into Thy presence and take upon ourselves to speak unto Thee, willingly offering ourselves for the sacred ministry of Thy house, that we may be servants of all for Thy sake; And we solemnly vow, promise, and engage, that unto whatsoever ministry Thou dost choose and elect us, therein we will do our duty to Thee and to Thy Church; and whensoever Thou shalt be pleased to call us by Thy word of prophecy, and to ordain us by the hands of Thine apostles, we will faithfully serve and follow Thee. In all these things we will not count our lives dear, but will joyfully suffer the loss of all things, reckoning them to be less than nothing, that we may finish our course with joy, and may keep whatsoever Thou shalt commit unto us unto the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Amen. So will we do; and so may God help us and save us, both now, and in the dreadful day of judgment.

¶ Then there shall be a sufficient pause, during which the Angel, Priests, Candidates, and all the people, shall remain kneeling, and shall lift up their hearts to Almighty God, and shall wait, if He be pleased

to make known His will concerning any who have offered. Upon rising, the Anthem in the Offertory shall be sung, and the Angel shall proceed with the remainder of the Service, but the Candidates shall remain within the choir, standing or kneeling, until they have received the Holy Communion.

In the Prayer of Oblation (after Consecration).

our prayers.

Especially we implore Thee, for the merit of that sacrifice which we now commemorate, that Thou wilt accept the vows which Thy servants here present have this day made unto Thee, and that Thou wilt answer them in the abundance of Thy peace and consolations. And those whom Thou shalt see fit in Thy wisdom and good pleasure to employ in the ministry, or to call into the sacred priesthood, of Thy Church, [and those especially whom Thou hast at this time seen fit to call,] do Thou endow with Thy spiritual gifts, and enable them to fulfil their several duties to Thy glory and the edifying of Thy Church: that, when our Lord Jesus Christ shall come, He may find them faithful and wise servants, whom He may make rulers over all His House.

R. Amen.

B

The Communion Anthem.

LESS the Lord, O my soul:

And forget not all His benefits.

Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things:
So that thy youth is renewed like the eagle's.
He made known His ways unto Moses:
His acts unto the children of Israel.
The Lord is merciful and gracious:
Slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy.

LMIGHTY GOD, whose service is the glory of Thy saints, and greater riches than all the treasures of this world; Send down, we beseech Thee, Thy blessing upon this Thy servant, whom in Thy Name we appoint to keep the door of Thy house. May he have grace with all readiness and joy to admit those who with true hearts approach to worship in Thy sanctuary, and be enabled to fulfil the duties of this his calling with patience and in moderation. So do Thou vouchsafe unto him an abundant entrance into the courts of thy sanctuary, in the heavenly Jerusalem; to the glory of Thy holy Name, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with Thee, O Father, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever One God, world without end.

R. Amen.

LMIGHTY GOD, who hast ordained the faculties of man to be the eternal instruments of rendering to Thee glory and praise; and hast moved the hearts of these Thy servants to desire to serve Thee, in singing the praises of Thy Name in the midst of Thy congregation; Grant unto them, we beseech Thee, Thy blessing and grace. O Thou, whose Name is Holy, who willest that all things in Thy house should be holiness unto thee; Sanctify these Thy servants, we humbly beseech Thee, in this holy ministry; endue them with the spirit of worship in Thy holy fear; and give unto them to sing the songs of the Spirit with the spirit and with the understanding; that, through the presence and power of the Holy Ghost, they may edify themselves and all Thy congregation in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with grace in their hearts. Hear us, for the sake of Jesus Christ; to whom, with Thee and the Holy Ghost, be glory and praise for ever.
