Form of Consecrating Chrism,

ON THE DAY AFTER PENTECOST, OR WHIT-MONDAY.

THE HOLY EUCHARIST.

After the Gloria in Excelsis, shall be added
Hallelujah.

Additional Collect.

[graphic]

LMIGHTY and Everlasting God, who by Thine own right hand hast exalted the Son of Man, and according to Thine eternal promise hast given the Holy Ghost to rest upon Him, anointing Him with the oil of gladness above His fellows; We humbly beseech Thee to make us partakers of the same anointing; that all Thy children, being sealed of Thee, may be filled with joy and peace in believing, and may abound in hope through the power of the Holy Ghost: For the merits of the same Jesus Christ, Thy Son, our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the same Spirit, ever One God, world without end.

R. Amen.

T The Epistle [1 John, ii. 20].

The Anthem after the Epistle.

HY throne, O God, is for ever and ever:

TH

The sceptre of Thy kingdom is a right sceptre.

Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness : Therefore God, Thy God, hath anointed Thee with the oil of gladness above Thy fellows.

All Thy garments smell of myrrh, and aloes, and cassia:

Out of the ivory palaces, whereby they have made Thee glad.

Hallelujah.

The Gospel [John, vii. 37-39].

The Preface, as appointed for the Week-days after Pentecost.

In the Prayer of Oblation (after Consecration).

our prayers. Celebrating the fulfilment of Thy promise in sending down, as at this season, the Holy Ghost upon Thy Church, we beseech Thee that the same Holy Ghost, the Spirit of Thy Son, may evermore come down from Him upon all Thy children, and dwell in them for ever; that, being anointed with the unction from the Holy One and confirmed with His perpetual strength, Thy priests may be clothed with righteousness, and Thy saints be filled with joy and peace.

R. Amen.

After the Commemorations (and before “Christ our Passover") the Archdeacon at the bidding of the Apostle shall bring to him the vessel with the oil as prepared for Chrism, and the Apostle shall place it on the altar to the right of the Holy Sacrament; then, turning round to the Congregation, he shall say,

Peace be with you.

R. And with thy spirit.

ET us pray, my beloved brethren, that the Almighty Lord God, from whom proceeds the grace of Blessing and Consecration, may vouchsafe through our ministry to consecrate and bless this ointment, that it may be a holy Chrism for anointing, in the service of His sanctuary.

A

Then kneeling before the altar,

LMIGHTY GOD, Creator of all things, who hast appointed this creature of oil to be a symbol of that heavenly grace and unction, that oil of joy and gladness, wherewith our High Priest and Head in the heavens hath been anointed; Who didst command Thy servant Moses to take sweet spices, and to make a holy anointing oil, and therewith to anoint the Tabernacle and all its furniture, the Ark of the Covenant, and the Altar, and also Aaron and his sons; prefiguring thereby the endowment and gift of the Holy Ghost; Who hast now according to Thy promise vouchsafed unto those that are regenerate in Christ, the anointing of the same Holy Ghost, consecrating them to be a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people, the temple and dwelling-place of God through the Spirit; we humbly beseech Thee to accept, consecrate, and bless this ointment, that it may be a holy Chrism, for the service of Thy sanctuary. And grant unto all those that shall be anointed therewith, the grace and power of Thy Spirit, that they may abound in all heavenly unction; and according to their several places in the body of Christ, so may they minister one to another, as good stewards of Thy manifold grace. Hear us, heavenly Father, for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the

unity of the Holy Ghost, ever One God, world without end.

R. Amen.

¶ Then the Apostle, rising, shall say,

E bless

consecrate, and dedicate this ointment, to be a holy Chrism for anointing, for the service of the Sanctuary. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.

R.. Amen.

¶ Then shall be sung the following Anthem:

EHOLD, how good and how pleasant it is:
For brethren to dwell together in unity!

how it

It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that
ran down upon the beard, even Aaron's beard:
That went down to the skirts of his garments;
As the dew of Hermon:

And as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion:

For there the Lord commanded the blessing:
Even life for evermore.

Glory, &c.

The Administration of the Communion shall proceed as usual, and after the conclusion of the service the Apostle shall deliver to the Archdeacon the remnant of the Chrism consecrated in the previous year, that the same may be carefully consumed by fire.

[Note. This Office, omitting what is set forth after the Prayers of Commemoration, may be used in any Church, either with the above Epistle and Gospel, or with the ordinary Epistle and Gospel for the day.]

Manner of Laying the First Stone in the Foundation of a Church, with Benediction.

On coming to the ground, if not already vested, the Angel and those with him shall put on their vestments in some suitable place, to be prepared for that purpose near the boundary.

T Being vested, the Angel shall say,

UR help is in the Name of the Lord,
R. Who hath made heaven and earth.
Blessed be the Name of the Lord,

R. From henceforth even for ever.
The Stone, which the builders rejected,
R. Hath become the head of the corner.
This is the Lord's doing;

R. And it is marvellous in our eyes.

[graphic]

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

R. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever

shall be. Amen.

Let us pray.

LORD GOD, who art exalted above the heavens, and yet vouchsafest to take up Thine abode upon earth, and to visit with Thy presence those who call upon Thee; Look down in the abundance of Thy goodness upon this place, upon which
