Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world;

R. Have mercy upon him.

¶ Then, as opportunity may offer, the Priest may read Isa. xxxviii., Ps. xxxviii. or lxxi., or other similar Chapters or Psalms; also the following Prayers, or some of them, using discretion as to the applicability of those selected to the state of the sick person.

L

OOK down, O Lord our Redeemer, on this Thy servant, who calleth upon Thee [and bring Thou up again his life from the gates of the grave*]. We beseech Thee, relieve his languishing, [heal his anguish,*] expel and put away all pain of heart and body; and of Thy mercy vouchsafe to him health and soundness, both of body and soul; that so he may be preserved to Thy Church, and be strengthened to do all Thy will during the time which Thou shalt prolong to him on the earth. Hear us, for the

sake of Jesus Christ our Lord.

R. Amen.

O Lord our God, who art the Physician, &c. [See this Prayer in the previous Service, omitting the words "cometh unto Thee in Thy holy ordinance, and"].

O most merciful God, who, according, &c. [See the previous Service.]

Prayers of Commendation of a Departing Soul.

ALMIGHTY and merciful God, we commend the spirit of this our dear brother [or, sister] Thy servant into Thy hands, as into the hands of a faithful Creator and most merciful Saviour; beseeching Thee that his soul may be precious in Thy sight. Wash him, we pray Thee, in the blood of the Lamb that was slain to take away the sins of the world. Whatsoever defilement he may have contracted in this miserable and naughty world, through the lusts of the flesh or the wiles of Satan, do Thou purge away; and blot out all his sins. Receive him, we beseech Thee, to Thy mercy; vouchsafe to him a quiet passage, and guide him through the valley of the shadow of death; place him in the habitations of light and peace, in the company of Thy saints and faithful people who are gone before: with them vouchsafe unto him Thy peace and quiet rest; and in the resurrection of the just do Thou make him partaker of the inheritance of the saints in light, there to reign with Thy holy apostles, with the goodly company of prophets and martyrs, and with all, Thy blessed saints, in glory and blessedness, for ever and ever.

R. Amen.

The following may be used in the discretion of the

Priest in the last moments of life.

DE

EPART in peace, thou blessed soul, from this world of misery and sin; depart, beyond the reach of temptation, beyond the power of Satan or of sin; in the Name of the Father, who created thee; in the Name of Jesus Christ, the Son of the living God, who died for thee; in the Name of the Holy Ghost the Comforter, who sanctifieth and preserveth thee. May the angels, which minister to the heirs of salvation, attend around thee; the glorious company of apostles and the goodly fellowship of prophets receive thee; may the noble army of martyrs, the triumphant band of confessors, the multitude of saints which have gone before, welcome thee to thy rest, wherein thou shalt rejoice in hope of that blessed resurrection, in the which, with all the Elect of God, thou shalt receive again Thy body, made like unto Christ's glorious body, and shalt have thy perfect consummation and bliss in the kingdom of eternal joy.

With whom, O merciful Father, Thou Judge Eternal, do Thou grant unto us also who remain to have our part, abiding in Thy fear and love, and patiently abounding in Thy work, until our change come.

THE HOLY EUCHARIST.

The Collect.

GOD, who hast provided for them that love Thee such good things as pass man's understanding; keep, we beseech Thee, the spirits of all those who are departed

up

in the faith, unto that day when this mortal shall put on immortality, and death shall be swallowed of life. Hear us for the sake of Jesus Christ, who hath died for our sins, and who liveth and abideth for ever, with Thee and with the Holy Ghost, One God.

The Epistle [1 Thess. iv. 13-18].

The Anthem after the Epistle

(if directed to be sung).

KNOW that my Redeemer liveth :

And shall stand at the latter day upon the

earth.

And though, after my skin, worms destroy this body: Yet in my flesh shall I see God.

I shall see Him for myself, mine eyes shall behold: Though my reins be consumed within me.

The Gospel [John, v. 24–29].

In the Prayer of Oblation (after Consecration).

our prayers. Especially remembering before Thee Thy servant Nwhom Thou hast [this day] taken unto Thyself, releasing him from this world of sorrow and of sin. Lord of the spirits of all flesh, leave him not, we pray Thee, in the power of the grave; leave him not in the land where all things are forgotten. May he abide in Thy peace, in the rest which thou reservest for Thy children, and receive again his body, renewed and raised up in glory and immortality, in the day of the resurrection.

R. Amen.

UNT

The Communion Anthem.

NTO the upright there ariseth light in the darkness:

He is gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous.
Surely he shall not be moved for ever:

The righteous shall be in everlasting remembrance.
He shall not be afraid of evil tidings:
His heart is fixed, trusting in the Lord.
His righteousness endureth for ever:
His horn shall be exalted with honour.

TOr this.

LORD, give ear unto my prayer.
That goeth not out of feigned lips.

Let my sentence come forth from Thy presence:
Let Thine eyes behold the thing that is equal.
Keep me as the apple of Thine eye:

Hide me under the shadow of Thy wings.

I will behold Thy face in righteousness:

I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with Thy likeness.

Additional Post-Communion Prayer.

LORD, who holdest in Thy hand the spirits of

Thy faithful, whether they be abiding in this life, or have departed unto their rest: We humbly beseech Thee in the communion of Thy saints, that Thou wilt accept us in this our service. And as Thou hast made us one in the bond of the Holy Ghost with all Thy saints who have gone before, so do Thou continually increase in every member of the One Body the energy of Thy divine life, by the same Holy Ghost: to whom, with Thee, O Father, and with Thine Only-begotten Son, we ascribe glory and praise for ever and ever.

R. Amen.
