PREFACE.

TRUTH, fair and noble as she is in herself, despises no suitable ornament, disdains no congenial help to the admiration and love of Man. In none of her various attitudes does she look fairer and nobler, than as the Self-dependent Faith-the Self-sufficient Religion. In no posture of her gracious form is she fitter to be adorned, or worthier to be admired. Sweet is it to gaze long on such an object, to explore all its beauties with the curious eye of love, and recommend each delightful discovery to less earnest admirers, which recommendation may be powerfully assisted by the contrasted ugliness of Error; and never surely does Error appear meaner and more hideous, than as the Robber
