N commencing the first number of the Young Scholar

for the year 1873, we think it advisable to indicate the path which we are about to pursue in the present year. It is only by obtaining the co-operation of our readers that we can hope to do any good; and before they can help us they must have some idea of what

we propose to do. We have received some letters expressing regret at our decision of discontinuing the lists of names. We have given our careful consideration to this point, but have seen no reason to change the determination at which we had previously arrived. Like most other earthly things, competition has in it a certain amount of evil; and we are afraid if young scholars only value the Young Scholar as a means of obtaining a prize, our circulation will be extremely limited. TI monthly examination is one distinct feature in the magazine, and as such it will remain ; but it must not, by taking up too much of our space, make the paper less valuable for those who do not compete. There is much that is unsatisfactory about all examinations. No two examiners have
