X.

His rest shall glorious then appear,
When his own Spirit dwells on earth,
And by his new creating power
*Gives time itself a second birth.

[blocks in formation]

The Gospel jubilee proclaim:

[ocr errors]

Angels to the four winds go forth, "In the almighty Saviour's name; "The year of his redeem'd is come; "Go, call his chosen people home.”

11.

Famine, and pestilence, and war,
His dreadful harbingers appear;
Earthquakes, and desolating storms,
Declare his awful judgment near:
Sudden it comes--as lightning flies
Swift from the east to western skies.
III.

Behold he comes in clouds enrobed,
To vindicate his righteous cause,
And strike the guilty rebel dead

Who dared to trample on his laws:
Sun, moon and stars, and powers that be,
Before his brighter glory flee.

Isarah 65. 17. § Messengers, or Misssionarie,

IV.

All hail victorious, heavenly King,
To thee let all the nations bow!
Thy sceptre and thy sword we hail;
Thy promise and thy threatening too;
Oh take thy power, unrival'd reign,
Nor make our expectations vain.

V.

Already faith and hope, inspired

By the sure promise of thy word, See outcast heathen share the grace, Purchased by our ascended Lord; With joyful haste behold them raise A temple sacred to his praise

VI.

'Til thy blest Gospel, like the sun,
Though every distant land has shone,
The powers on earth, and powers in hell,
Dispute the honors of thy throne:

Oh let that long expected day

Chase the dark night of sin away.

VII.

Too long the peaceful pruning hook *
Has glitter'd in a murderous spear;
Too long the plough-share been misused
To force the agonizing tear!

Oh cast them to the moulding fire,
And shape them as our wants require!

VIII.

Let barren heaths, and desert wastes,
Beneath the renovated sword,
Rise into fruitful smiling fields,
Like the fair garden of the Lord;

* Joel 111. 10. Micah 4. 3.

And grass, and herbs, and corn again
Adorn the now ensanguined plain.

IX.

Let war's curst arts be all forgot;
And peace, and sweet fraternal love,
Discord with her infernal train,

For ever from the earth remove !
Oh shorten these destructive days,
And change our prayer to songs of praise!

HYMN LXXVIII.

The Blessings of the Messiah's Kingdom

SEE

I.

EE the glad day approach,
The long expected time,

When JESUS shall his reign increase

To every distant clime.

II.

The wilderness shall bow Before his sovereign power; His enemies embrace the dust, And thence arise no more.

III.

Princes, his rightful sway
Shall be constrain'd to own;
And kings their diadems shall lay
Submissive at his throne.

IV.

Nations with joy shall serve
A monarch so divine,

And in exulting strains shall cry,

"The kingdoms, LORD, are thine "

poor and needy soul

By violence oppress'd,

Shall safety and deliverance find,
His sorrows all redress'd.

VI.

He shall for ever live;
For ever, ever reign,
Triumphant over all his foes,
All opposition slain.

VII.

Like rain on new-mown grass,
As fructifying showers,
His gracious Spirit shall descend,
With all its vital powers.

VIII.

To him shall prayer be made,
And daily praise be given;
For saints below shall emulate
Th' enraptured songs of heaven.

IX.

The lofty mountain top

Shall echo with the sound;
And the sweet music of his name
From every rock rebound.

X.

Let the whole earth be fill'd With thy own glory, Lord! Our prayers are all compris'd in this,"Let JESUS be ador'd!"

[blocks in formation]

From pole to pole, from sea to sea,
Thy glorious grace extend!

XII.

All private wishes yield

To a request like this;

And every selfish thought is lost
In such enlarged bliss.

[blocks in formation]

IF there are passions in my soul,
(And passions sure there be)
Now they are all at thy controul,
My JESUS, all for thee.

II.

If love, that pleasing power, can rest
In hearts so hard as mine,
Come, gentle SAVIOUR, to my breast,
For all my love is thine.

: III.

Let the gay world, with treacherous art,
Allure my eyes in vain :

I have convey'd away my heart,
Ne'er to return again.

IV.

I feel my warmest passions dead.
To all that earth can boast;

This soul of mine was never made
For vanity and lust,
