the shadow of death, may attain to the light of thy truth, and the joy of thy salvation. Grant that all who name the name of Christ may depart from iniquity, and so live up to their high and holy profession, that they may give no just occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme. Be gracious and favorable, O Lord, in an especial manner to thy Church, built upon the foundation of apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief Plead thy own cause, and maintain thy true and holy religion, which thou hast so long and wonderfully owned. Let not the enemies of thy Church ever prevail; but let all that stand up for the defence of the truth, prosper in their designs; and still give us cause to say, the Lord be magnified, who has pleasure in the prosperity of his

Bless with thy sanctifying graces, the President of these United States, and all others in authority over us. O Lord, protect their persons, direct their counsels, and prosper all their endeavors for the public safety, peace, and welfare. Make ministers an example to the flock, in all sobriety, righteousness, and holiness of living. And establish us all a holy people to thyself; that with one heart, we may all agree in the same faith, and adorn it with a suitable and holy life.

Comfort all that want the comforts which we enjoy; and apply thy succors and consolations to the several necessities and calamities of all thy

afflicted ones. Remember, with the favor which thou bearest to thy people, all our friends, and relations, and benefactors. Make them, O Lord, such as thou wouldst have them to be, and such as, in Christ Jesus, thou wilt mercifully accept, here to thy favor, and hereafter to thy glorious kingdom. Forgive our enemies, and turn their hearts, and turn ours to forgive them. And direct all our ways to please thee, that thou mayest make even our enemies to be at peace with us, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

PSALM XXXIV. 7.-The angel of the Lord encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them.

PSALM Xci. 11. He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.

MATT. xviii. 10.-Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven.

HEB. i. 14.—Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation.

GEN. xxviii. 12.—-Jacob dreamed, and behold a ladder set upon the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending upon it.

ACTS xii. 7.-The angel of the Lord came upon him, and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And the angel said unto him, Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals. Acrs v. 19.

LUKE XVI. 22.-It came to pass that the beggar died, and was carried by angels into Abraham's bosom.

LUKE XV. 10. There is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.

COL. ii. 18.-Let no man beguile you of your reward, in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels.

PSALM XXVII. 1.-The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life, of whom shall I be afraid?

ISAIAH xliii. 2.-When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burnt; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee. For I am the Lord thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Saviour.

O LORD, thou hast been our Refuge from one generation to another. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever the earth and the worlds. were made, thou art God from everlasting. Upon thy mercy-seat in the heavens thou waitest to be gracious, while we, thy sinful creatures, draw nigh unto thee, who art reconciling the world unto thyself by Christ, not imputing their trespasses unto

them.

When we call to remembrance the days that are gone, from our youth up even until now, and consider how many of them have been spent in forgetfulness of thee, we are afraid of thy judgments, O Lord. Seeing our sins are more in number than

the hairs of our head, our hearts might well fail because of them, did we not know that thy compassions fail not. But, we beseech thee, O Lord, deal not in thy just displeasure with thy servants. Blot out the hand-writing that is against us; and grant unto us redemption through the blood of thy beloved Son, even the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of thy grace. May we be washed, and sanctified, and justified, in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by thy Spirit, O Lord God.

We adore and magnify thy name, Father of mercies, and God of all consolation, for having called us, not according to our works, but according to thy own purpose and grace, in Christ Jesus. O for a song of praise! for a psalm of evertasting thanksgiving unto thee, the God of our salvation! Worthy art thou that wast slain, to receive power, and riches, and honor, and glory, and blessing.

Teach us, O Lord, to live, day by day, in humble dependence on thy promises, in cheerful obedience to thy laws, and in a sure and certain hope of a blessed immortality. Keep us, we beseech thee, with thy perpetual mercy: and because the frailty of man, without thee, cannot but fall, keep us ever by thy help from all things hurtful, and lead us to all things profitable to our salvation. From all our enemies, temporal and spiritual, defend us, O Christ. In all time of our tribulation, in all time of our prosperity, in the hour of death, and in the day of judgment, good

Lord, deliver us-Grant that, being made thy own children by adoption, and being incorporated into thy holy Church, we may receive the fulness of thy grace, and finally, with the residue of thy people, may be made partakers of thy heavenly kingdom.

We now desire, O heavenly Father, humbly to commend ourselves, and all who belong to us, to the care of thy good providence. How excellent is thy loving-kindness, O God! Therefore do the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wing; and, therefore, do we, thy sinful and helpless creatures, implore thy protection through the hours of darkness. Watch over us with thy all-seeing eye; and vouchsafe unto us comfortable sleep. May we lie down in peace, and take our rest. May we dwell safely, and be quiet from fear of evil. But whereas we continually carry about us a body of death, give unto us all grace to consider our latter end. As often as we lie down on the bed of sleep, help us to look forward to that sleep in the dust of the earth, from which all shall awake at the last, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. And may we be found meet, in that day, to join in the grateful and triumphant song, which thou hast prepared for those who wait devoutly for thy appearing.
