the throne of thy glory. Especially we entreat thy fatherly forgiveness of all which thou hast seen amiss in us this day. Pardon us, good Lord, that we have not worshipped thee, served thee, or obeyed thee, with suitable reverence and devotion. Forgive the wanderings of our minds, the coldness of our hearts, and the unprofitableness of our best services; and deal with us, not according to our merits, but according to thy rich mercy. Think on thy promises, and upon thy loving-kindnesses which have been ever of old. Through the blood of thy beloved Son grant unto us pardon and peace; that we may be cleansed from all our sins, and may serve thee with a quiet mind.

Save us, merciful God, from the guilt of abusing our privileges. Cherish by thy Holy Spirit, and gracious Providence, every good desire, and holy resolution that may have been awakened in us this day. Suffer us not to forget the instructions of thy word, nor resist the strivings of thy grace; but may thy blessing so rest upon the seed sown in our hearts, that it may bring forth abundantly.

Teach us not to seek our happiness in the things of this vain world: but do thou, O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works proceed, give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give: that our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments; and, also, that, by thee, we, being defended from the fear of our enemies, may pass our time in rest and quiet

ness. Be thou, O Lord, our portion and inheritance in the land of the living. Show us thy marvellous loving-kindness, thou that art the Saviour of them that trust in thee. Show us the path of life; make plain thy way before our face; and bring us, at last, to thy presence, where there is fulness of joy, and to thy right hand, where there are pleasures for evermore.

Vouchsafe, O Lord, to accept our thanks for all the bounties of thy providence and grace. We bless thee for casting our lot in a land where the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth, and also for the peace and protection which we enjoy in this favored land. We glorify thy name for nourishing us, and bringing us up in a Church which is built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner-stone. We bless thee for the many advantages afforded us on the day which is past; for thy house of prayer; for thy appointed ministers; for thy holy word and sacraments; and for all other means of grace and salvation. We thank thee for food and raiment; for health and strength; for kind friends and benefactors; for peace and protection by day, and for rest and safety by night; and for all the comforts and conveniences of life. Above all, we praise thee for the gift of thy Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, and for the hope of salvation through his blood. And we entreat thee, Almighty God, to grant us perfectly to know him to be the

way, the truth, and the life; that, under the guidance of thy Holy Spirit, we may steadfastly walk in the path that leadeth unto life eternal.

We further beseech thee, O Father Almighty, to open the ears of thy compassion to our supplications for others. Mercifully look upon the universal Church, which thou hast purchased to thyself with the precious blood of thy dear Son. We pray for all to whom thou hast committed the message of reconciliation. May those who are appointed to teach others be themselves taught of thee, Qualify them, in all things, for the work to which thou hast called them; that they may be able, by sound doctrine, both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers, and to comfort and edify thy believing people. Look, with compassion, on such as have neglected thy ordinances, and profaned thy holy day. Lord, turn them from the error of their ways; and give them repentance unto salvation. Grant that those who have waited on thee devoutly may renew their strength, and be prepared to run, with increased earnestness, the race that is set before them.

To thy gracious care and protection we commend ourselves and all who are dear unto us this night. Preserve us, both outwardly in our bodies, from temporal evils, and, inwardly in our souls, from our spiritual foes. Give unto us peaceful and refreshing sleep; and grant that we may awake in the morning, strengthened both in body and soul

for the various duties of the week. And, when our eyes shall be closed in the darkness of the grave, may we rest in Jesus, and in the last day, be raised from the dead, to die no more, and be made like unto the angels, being thy children, O God, and the children of the resurrection.

O thou, who hearest and answerest prayer, hear us in these our humble petitions for ourselves and others; and grant us an answer of peace, for the love of thy only Son our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Monday Morning.

PSALM Xci. 1.-He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High, shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord he is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in him will I trust. He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: His truth shall be thy shield and buckler. There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.

PSALM CXXI. 1.—I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is thy keeper. The Lord is thy defence upon thy right hand. The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil; he shall preserve thy soul. The Lord shall preserve thy going out, and thy coming in, from this time forth, and even for evermore.

PSALM XXXVII. 3.-Trust in the Lord and do good, so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed. MATT. vi. 26.—Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they.

MATT. vi. 26.—I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to-day is, and to-morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? For your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.
