It thus appears that "quarto," "octavo," and the rest, do not always indicate the same size in inches; this depending in each case upon the size of the sheet used.

GIZE CF TYPE.

In determining the selection of type the author requires to take into consideration a great variety of points. For books addressed to children or elderly people, he must choose a large round letter, easy to

the eye. For books of reference, such as guide books or statistical compilations, where the main intention is to give in small compass the largest possible number of facts, he may select a very small type. In every case, the class addressed must be carefully considered. The size of the page, if previously resolved upon, will limit the choice of letter, at least in most cases; a very large letter is out of place on a small page. The following are samples of the types more commonly in use in printed books; the Roman or usual letters being exemplified in the first three lines, the corre sponding italic letters in the final line.
