refer to them in long array, but I have aimed to avoid any display of erudition obtained at the price of being diffuse; and have therefore seldom done more than relate what concerned Defoe in such controversies. Whenever he attacked others or defended himself, I have endeavoured to state the matter justly, but as concisely as the circumstances admitted; remembering, that the controversial part has already been dilated on by others, and may probably form the least interesting portion of my Memoir of Defoe's Life.
