of his sufferings. But over the dread and pain of death, Christ has gained the victory for his faithful people. O death where is thy sting?' may the christian say. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me.' Fear not, for I am with thee: be not dismayed, for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee. When thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burnt, neither shall the flame kindle upon thee; for I am the Lord thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Saviour.' Sin and hell are also vanquished for the christian in his exalted head. The desert of sin is everlasting death. The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The wicked shall be turned into hell, with all the people that forget God.' Cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness, where there is weeping, and wailing, and gnashing of teeth.' From this place of torment, Christ delivers all who trust in him, since he delivers them from the

curse and condemnation justly due to sin. 'He was made sin or a sin-offering for us-who knew no sin, that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.' He was called Jesus, because he shall save his people from their sins. The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law; but thanks be to God who hath given us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.' There is no condemnation to them that are in Jesus Christ; who walk not after the flesh, but after the spirit. The blood of Christ cleanses from all sin.' How consolatory then are the words of the text to the sincere christian.

Though I walk in the midst of trouble, thou wilt revive me: thou shalt stretch forth thine hand against the wrath of mine enemies, and thy right hand shall save me.'

I have observed that the promises are the portion only of those who believe with the heart; an awful consideration to those who are not to be ranked in their number! But God's arm is not shortened, that it cannot save. God is a God hearing prayer; and there is every reason to imagine that all who ask for that faith (which is the fruit of the spirit) with sincerity and

importunity, will receive it; and consequently become heirs of the promises, and of this among

the rest; That in the midst of trouble, God will revive them: that he will stretch forth his hand against the wrath of their enemies, and that his right hand shall save them.'

SERMON XII.

JOHN, III, 36.

He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life; and he that believeth not the Son of God shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

It has always struck me as one of the most glorious characteristics of the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, that it calls and invites, with the most endearing solicitations, sinners of every description, to participate in the unspeakable blessings of salvation, through faith in the merits and sufferings of God's dear Son. "Whoever will' is invited to come and take of the waters of life freely. He who cometh,' says our Lord, notwithstanding the multitude and magnitude of his transgressions, shall in no wise-on no

me,

"Come unto

all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.' And this is a faithful saying, and worthy of all men to be received, that Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners.' And in my text, 'He-any person, without the slightest limitation-that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life; and he that believeth not the Son of God shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.' I say, the fulness, and freeness of salvation, wrought out for sinners by our Lord Jesus Christ, in the universality of its offers always appears to me, as one of its peculiar and very lovely features. This is the subject of our ministry; and what subject can be better calculated to alarm the thoughtless and the gay? What subject can be more replete with comfort and consolation to the contrite and broken heart? Christ, and him crucified, was all St. Paul wished to know; and Christ, and him crucified, is all that we should be anxious to know: for it is "The power of God, and the wisdom of God, to every one who believeth.'

'He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life.' I ask then, why do you not believe? Why you are so continually deaf to all the exhorta
