This Book of Hymns is compiled from

various sources, great assistance having been derived from Collections previously published. It is an attempt to bring Metrical Hymns into greater harmony with the Services of the Church of England; such an arrangement having been adopted not only because it appeared most suitable to a Book of Church of England Hymns, but also because those Services afford so large and varied a course of subjects for praise.

FIRST SUNDAY.

THE Advent of our God

Our prayers must now employ,

And we must meet Him on His road
With hymns of holy joy.

The everlasting Son
Incarnate soon shall be ;

He will a servant's form put on,
To make His people free.

Daughter of Zion, rise!
And greet thy lowly King;
And do not wickedly despise
The mercies He will bring.

As Judge, in clouds of light.
He will come down again,
And all His scatter'd saints unite
With Him in heaven to reign.

Before that awful day,

May all our sin be gone!

All the old man be put away,
All the new man put on!
