CALIFORNIA, an extensive country in the western portion of N. America, divided into Lower and Upper California.

falls. The vegetation, as might be expected, is very scanty. Figs, olives, dates, and vines are, however, cultivated in the less sterile portions to some extent.

Alta or ǎ-wack') Mountains, extending from about the country which lies w of the Anahuac (an32 to 425 N lat.: bounded on the N by Oregon, E by the great mountain chain of N. America, nia, and w by the Pacific. It is about 700 m. s by Chihuahua, Sonora, and Lower Califor in extent from N to s, and from 600 to 800 from E to w. Respecting a large part of this country little or nothing is known. The recent explorations of Captain Fremont (of the U. S. Topographical Engineers) have given us far more definite and exact information concerning the interior than we had before possessed.

chain of mountains met with is the Coast On passing inland from the sea, the first highlands which form so large a portion of Range, which is a continuation of the rocky Lower California; further inland is the Sierra Nevada (se-er'ră na-vah'dă) or "Snowclad range." Both of these mountain chains run nearly in the direction of the sea-shore; miles, the latter at a distance from 100 to 200 the former at a distance, varying from 40 to 60 miles from the Pacific. The valley between them is considered to be the finest part of California. The whole country between the Sierra Nevada and the Pacific is said to be destined at no distant period to contain a large well calculated for settlement, and is probably population.

East of the Sierra Nevada, and between this chain and the Wahsatch Mountains, is situated the Great Basin of California, bounded on ev700 miles from N to s, and perhaps 400 from x ery side by hills or mountains, and extending explored, it is known to contain rivers and to w. Though only a small part of it has been reach the ocean, being probably taken up by lakes, of which none of the waters ever evaporation, or lost in the sand of the more pears to be more or less sterile, and a large arid districts. The whole of this region apportion of it is known to be an uninhabitable desert. On the NE margin of the Great Basin Salt Lake, the waters of which are salter at an elevation of above 4000 feet, is the Great than those of the sea. (See Great Salt LAKE.)
