and sheep, the wolf, the panther or American tiger, the wild horse, the antelope, and deer. Beavers abound on many of the streams, particularly the upper tributaries of the Colorado. The birds of this country are generally similar to those of the United States.

In some of the fertile portions of California, wheat of an excellent quality is produced in abundance. Indian corn, potatoes, beans, peas, &c., grow well. The climate and soil appear also to be exceedingly well adapted to The cultivation of grapes.

The white inhabitants of this country, with the exception of the American immigrants, resemble those of the other parts of Mexico, being indolent, and fond of outward show; they are said to be much addicted to gambling. They abound in horses, and are generally fearless and expert riders; in this respect the women are said to be nearly equal to the men. The chief American settlement in California is NUEVA HELVETIA, in the valley of the Sacramento river. The principal towns are MONTEREY, SAN DIEGO, PUEBLO DE LOS ANGELES, SAN FRANCISCO, and SANTA BARBARA. These will be noticed under their respective heads.
