4 Worship, honour, power, and blessing,
Thou art worthy to receive;
Loudest praises, without ceasing,
Meet it is for us to give:
Help, ye bright angelic spirits!
Bring your sweetest, noblest lays!
Help to sing our Saviour's merits;
Help to chant Immanuel's praise.

Glorious things spoken of Zion.-ANON.
Giles 40. Sunderland 367. Consolation 393.
LORIOUS things of thee are spoken,
Zion, city of our God!

He, whose word cannot be broken, Form'd thee for his own abode. 2 On the Rock of Ages founded,

What can shake thy sure repose?
With salvation's walls surrounded,
Thou mayst smile at all thy foes.
3 [See! the streams of living waters
Springing from eternal love,
Well supply thy sons and daughters,
And all fear of want remove:
4 Who can faint while such a river
Ever flows thy thirst t' assuage?
Grace, which like the Lord, the giver,
Never fails, from age to age.

5 Round each habitation hovering,
See the cloud and fire appear!
For a glory and a covering,
Showing that the Lord is near:
6 Thus deriving from their banner,
Light by night and shade by day,

Safe they feed upon the manna
Which he gives them when they pray.]
7 Blest inhabitants of Zion,

Wash'd in the Redeemer's blood!
Jesus, whom their souls rely on,
Makes them kings and priests to God.
8 'Tis his love his people raises
Over self to reign as kings;
And as priests his solemn praises
Each for a thank-off'ring brings.

9 Saviour, if of Zion's city

I thro' grace a member am;
Let the world deride or pity,
I will glory in thy name:

10 Fading is the worldling's pleasure,
All his boasted pomp and show!
Solid joys and lasting treasure,
None but Zion's children know.

Grateful Recollections of Mercies.-
ROBINSON.

259. Ebenezer Chapel 37. Giles's 40. Jewin Street 222.

1 COME, thou fount of every blessing,
Tune my heart to sing thy grace,

Streams of mercy never ceasing,
Call for songs of loudest praise:
Teach me some melodious sonnet,
Sung by flaming tongues above:
Praise the mount-O fix me on it,
Mount of God's unchanging love.

2 Here I raise my Ebenezer,

Hither by thy help I'm come,
And I hope, by thy good pleasure,
Safely to arrive at home.

X

Jesus sought me when a stranger, Wand'ring from the fold of God; He, to save my soul from danger, Interpos'd his precious blood. 3 O! to grace, how great a debtor Daily I'm constrain❜d to be! Let that grace, Lord, like a fetter, Bind my wand'ring heart to thee! Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, Prone to leave the God I love— Here's my heart, Lord, take and seal it, Seal it from thy courts above.

Prayer for the Congregation.-
ANONYMOUS.

260. Carlisle New 39. Consolation 393. Welsh 210.

1 PEACE be to this congregation,
Peace to every soul therein;

Peace the foretaste of salvation,
Peace the fruit of cancell'd sin!
Peace that speaks its heav'nly giver,
Peace to sensual minds unknown;
Peace divine, that lasts for ever,
Here erects its glorious throne.
2 Prince of Peace, if thou art near us,
Fix in all our hearts thy home;
By thy swift appearance cheer us,
Quickly let thy kingdom come:
Answer all our expectation,

Give our raptur'd souls to prove
Glorious, uttermost salvation,
Heavenly, everlasting love.

Watching the Foe.-DR. HAWEIS.

261. Humble Souls 22. Jewin Street 222.

1 LUKEWARM souls, the foe grows

stronger,

See what hosts your camp surrounds; Arm to battle, lag no longer;

Hark! the silver trumpet sounds.

2 Wake, ye sleepers; wake, what mean you? Sin besets you round about: Up and search; the world's within you, Slay, or chase the traitor out. 3 Give the fawning foe no credit, Lo the bloody flag's unfurl'd;

That base heart (the word hath said it) Loves not God that loves the world. 4 Shun the shame of foully falling,

Cumber'd captives, clogg'd with clay; Prove your faith, make sure your calling; Wield the sword, and win the day.

262.

Humbly venturing on Jesus.-ANONYMOUS. Carmel 35. Carlisle New 39. Tabernacle 239. AVIOUR, canst thou love a traitor?

[ocr errors]

Canst thou love a child of wrath?

Can a hell-deserving creature
Be the purchase of thy death?

2 Is thy blood so efficacious

As to make my nature clean?
Is thy sacrifice so precious,
As to free me from my sin?
3 Lord, this is my resolution,
At thy dearest feet to fall;
Here I'll meet with condemnation,
Or a freedom from
my thrall.

4 If I meet with condemnation,
Justly I deserve the same;
If I meet with free salvation,
I will praise thy gracious name.

263.

Benediction.-NEWTON.

Consolation 393. Jewin Street 222.

MAY

AY the grace of Christ our Saviour,
And the Father's boundless love,

With the Holy Spirit's favour,

Rest upon us from above!

Thus may we abide in union

With each other and the Lord;
And possess, in sweet communion,
Joys which earth cannot afford.

Jesus the chief Friend.-ANONYMOUS. 264. Eltham 46. Spa Chapel 52. (16th.) NE there is above all others,

ONE

Well deserves the name of friend;

His is love beyond a brother's,
Costly, free, and knows no end.
They who once his kindness prove,
Find it everlasting love!

2 When he liv'd on earth abased,

Friend of sinners was his name;
Now, above all glory raised,
He rejoices in the same;

Still he calls them brethren, friends,
And to all their wants attends.
3 Oh, for grace our hearts to soften!
Teach us, Lord, at length to love;
