X. As a relief from more serious fubjects, and to render our undertaking more deferving the countenance and fupport of a difcerning public, a certain judicious traveller, well known by his obfervations and evidence on the Slave-Trade, and voyages to Africa, has engaged to furnish us with geographical and other curious defcriptions of that delightful country, extracted from his own journals, which will be occafionally embellished with views of that part of the coaft, where it is intended to form a fettlement. It is prefumed, that fuch an authentic account, as may be depended on will be highly acceptable to our readers.*

XI. We have the pleasure to add, that Mr. Barthelemon, whofe great abilities in facred compofition are well known, has engaged to fet to mufic, on purpose for this work, the Pfalms of David in regular order from the Bible verfion; so that the lovers of facred melody will most probably be amply gratified in receiving fuch a felection of the Songs of Zion as have never hitherto appeared in any fimilar publication. In the firft number will be given the Glorification of the Angels on the Lord's firft Advent; and, in the fecond number of this work, the Song of Mofes and of the Lamb, as defcribed in the XVth chapter of the Revelations, Great and marvellous are thy works, Lord God Almighty, &c. which fong, we have reason to believe, will be fung with affection by every true member of the New Church. degrees, be in poffeffion of that aftonishing defcription of Love truly conjugal, and its spiritual Delights; and may thereby anticipate, and be led in fome degree to perceive, the unutterable delights, peace, and felicity, which even the angels of heaven enjoy.

Such is the plan now offered to the public; which, if properly executed, will afford much inftruction and entertainment. The editors are convinced, that, to enfure fuccefs, they must first deserve it; to accomplish this end, no application or endeavours will be wanting on their part, and, from the copious and unrifled treasury in their poffeffion, they flatter themfelves with the moft pleafing hopes of fuccefs.

Any hints, for the improvement of the work, will be thankfully received, by addreffing a line to Mr. Henry Servante, Secretary to the London New-Jerufalem Society, No. 45, Upper Marybone-Street, near Tichfield-Street, where every information refpecting the faid plan may be

known.

It is with unfpeakable pleasure we are authorized to add, that a gentleman (one of the editors of this work) is the poffeffor of all the original manufcripts of Emanuel Swedenborg, now in Stockholm; whofe legal right to the fame having been lately determined in his favor, an account thereof will be printed in fome future number, for the fatisfaction of the public.

Explanation of the Frontispiece.

OWARDS the top is reprefented the Portrait of Emanuel Swedenborg, on a Medallion, fupported by two Angels, and furrounded with bright rays of light. The Palm-Trees, on the fides, are emblems of Victory in Temptations, and have alfo an allufion to Africa, where the above enlightened author, in his printed works and manufcripts, often affirms the New Church to be implanted. Between the trees is fufpended a curtain, with the title of the work, and under it an Altar, adorned with garlands of flowers, on which are two Doves, representing Conjugal Love. At the fides are feen Rocks, with smooth and clear Water, the Correspondence of Truth.

Explanation of the Subject of the Plate taken from one of the memorable Relations in the Treatife on Conjugal Love.

A Convocation of Angels being affembled in the World of Spirits, feveral Angelic Spirits, felected from among the learned of the different kingdoms of Europe, appeared there to deliver their fentiments on the true origin, virtue, aud power, of Conjugal Love: A golden Mitre, richly adorned with diamonds and other precious ftones being the prize or reward to be affigned to him who fhould give the best definition on this important fubject. It was found that the Chriftians, from the different nations, had no proper idea concerning it: A band of Africans, who had flood filent at some distance from the golden table whereon the prize was laid, (and had heard the different opinions relative to the point in queftion,) modeftly advanced forward, and defired leave to speak ;-he had no fooner ended, than an Angel appeared in the Eaft, and a voice from heaven was heard faying

The Mitre fhall be for the African.
