draweth the curtains of darkness around us; so He maketh all things to be hushed and still, that His large family may sleep in peace.

Labourers spent with toil, and young children, and every little humming insect, sleep quietly, for God watcheth over you.

You may sleep, for He never sleeps; you may close your eyes in safety, for His eye is always open to protect you.

When the darkness is passed away, and the beams of the morning sun strike through your eyelids, begin the day with praising God, who hath taken care of you through the night.

Let His praise be in our hearts, when we lie down; let His praise be on our lips when we awake.

Psalm iv. 8.-I will both lay me down in peace and sleep; for Thou, Lord, only makest me to dwell in safety.

Isaiah xli. 10.-Fear not, for I am with thee; be not dismayed, for I am thy God; I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.

2 Corinthians vi. 18.-I will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

Psalm ciii. 13.-Like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear Him. [See also Isaiah xlix. 15.]

Trust Him, my soul! the same kind hand
Sustains you, that the rainbow spanned:
If clouds of sorrow should not dim,
You might forget to trust in Him.

God, who dwellest everywhere!
God, who makest all Thy care!
God, who hearest every prayer!
Thou who seest the heart :
Thou to whom we lift our eyes-
Father! help our souls to rise,
And beyond these narrow skies
See Thee as Thou art.

Let our anxious thoughts be still,
Holy trust adore Thy will,
Holy love our bosoms fill,
Let our songs ascend.
Dearest friends may parted be,
All our earthly treasures flee,
Yet we never part from Thee,
Our Eternal Friend.

See Hymn 131, Sunday School Hymn Book, beginning

"Great God! and wilt Thou condescend To be my Father and my Friend?"

Is there a little orphan child—
Father and mother gone-

Who deems himself quite desolate :
Left in the world alone?

It is not so, while Christ's own words
On every lip are laid,

While each a "Father" hath "in heaven"
To cheer him and to aid.

Oh! let him seek the churchyard ground,
Some quiet summer even,

When calmly on his father's grave
Looks down the sunset heaven:

And let him gaze on the blue sky,
And dry the tears that gather
In his dim eyes, and breathe a prayer
Unto his other Father.

Ye happier children, who below
Still have a father's love,
Remember, earthly love is taught
To lead to things above.

LESSON 14.

THE COMFORT OF GOD'S OMNIPRESENCE AND
OMNISCIENCE.

"Greenwood's Sermons to Children."

WALTER was very glad when his mother's letter came. He opened it himself, and found that she had printed it neatly and clearly all through, on purpose that he might be able to read it himself. He sat down on the step of the porch, and was very much pleased to find that he could make it all out without having to go to Martha for help.

In the second page it said, "I think of you, my darling, many times in every day, especially when your bed-time comes; and when my bedtime comes, it seems lonely to me not to have my little boy beside me. You too, I dare say, feel lost and lonely sometimes, because I am not with you to sympathize with you in what you
