PSALM XLIII. Trust in God.

JUDGE me, O God, and plead my cause against an ungodly nation; O deliver me from the deceitful and unjust man. 2 For thou art the God of my strength, why dost thou cast me off? why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy? 3 O send out thy light and thy truth; let them lead me, let them bring me unto thy holy hill, and to thy tabernacles. 4 Then will I go unto the altar of God, unto God my exceeding joy : yea, upon the harp will I praise thee, O God, my God. 5 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.

PSALM XLV. XLVI. Kingdom of Christ.

My heart is inditing a good matter: I speak of the things which I have made touching the king: my tongue is the pen of a ready writer. 2 Thou art fairer than the children of men: grace is poured into thy lips therefore God hath blessed thee for ever. 4 In thy majesty ride prosperously, because of truth and meekness, and righteousness. 6 Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: the sceptre of thy kingdom is a right sceptre. 7 Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness: therefore God, thy God hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. 17 I will make thy name to be remembered in all generations: therefore shall the people praise thee for ever and ever. 1 GOD is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the ' mountains be carried into the midst of the sea. 3.

Though the waters thereof roar, and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. 4 There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God: the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High. 5 God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early.

PSALM XLIX. God's righteous Providence.

HEAR this, all ye people, give ear all ye inhabitants of the world: 2 Both low and high, rich and poor together. 3 My mouth shall speak of wisdom: and the meditation of my heart shall be of understanding. 4 I will incline mine ear to a parable; I will open my dark saying. 5 Wherefore should I fear in the days of evil, when iniquity shall compass me about? 6 They that trust in their wealth, and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches: 7 None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him: 9 That he should still live for ever, and not see corruption. 12 Nevertheless, man being in honour, abideth not he is like the beasts that perish, 13 This their way is their folly; yet their posterity approve their sayings. their sayings. 14 Like sheep they are laid in the grave, death shall feed on them; and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning, and their beauty shall consume in the grave, from their dwelling. 15 But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave; for he shall receive me. 16 Be not thou afraid when one is made rich, when the glory of his house is increased. 17 For when he dieth, he shall carry nothing away: his glory shall not descend after him. 18 Though while he lived, he blessed his soul: and men will praise thee, when thou doest well to thyself. 19 He shall go to the generation of his

fathers, they shall never see light. 20 Man that is in honour, and understandeth not, is like the beasts that perish.

PSALM L.

Obedience the best Service.

THE mighty God, even the Lord hath spoken, and called the earth, from the rising of the sun unto the going down thereof. 2 Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God hath shined. 3 Our God shall come, and shall not keep silence a fire shall devour before him, and it shall be very tempestuous round about him. 4 He shall call to the heavens from above, and to the earth, that he may judge his people. 5 Gather my saints. together unto me those that have made a covenant with me by sacrifice. 6 And the heavens shall declare his righteousness for God is judge himself. 7 Hear O my people, and I will speak; O Israel, and I will testify against thee: I am God, even thy God. 8 I will not reprove thee for thy sacrifices, or thy burnt-offerings to have been continually before me. 9 I will take no bullock out thy house, nor he-goats out of thy folds. 10 For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills. 11 I know all the fowls of the mountains and the wild beasts of the field are mine. 12 If I were hungry, I would not tell thee, for the world is mine, and the fulness thereof. 13 Will I eat the fiesh of bulls, or drink the blood of goats?

14 Offer unto God thanksgiving, and pay thy vows unto the most High. 15 And call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me. 16 But unto the wicked God saith, What hast thou to do to declare my statutes, or that thou shouldest take my covenant in thy mouth? 17 Seeing thou hatest instruction, and castest

18 When thou sawest a

my words behind thee. thief, then thou consentedst with bin, and hast been partaker with adulterers. 19 Thou givest thy mouth to evil, and thy tongue frameth deceit. 20 Thou sittest and speakest against thy brother; thou slanderest thine own mother's son. 21 These things hast thou done, and I kept silence: thou thoughtest that I was altogether such an one as thyself: but I will reprove thee, and set them in order before thine eyes. 22 Now consider this, ye that forget God, lest I tear you in pieces, and there be none to deliver. 23 Whoso offereth praise, glorifieth me: and to him that ordereth his conversation aright, will I shew the salvation of God.

PSALM LI. Deep Contrition.

HAVE mercy upon me, O God, according to thy loving kindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. 3 For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. 4 Against thee, thee only have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest. 5 Behold, I was shapen in iniquity, and in sin. 9 Hide thy face from my sins; and blot out all mine iniquities. 10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. 11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. 12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation and uphold me with thy free spirit. 15 O Lord, open thou my lips, and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise. 17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise,

PSALM LXV. God's great Goodness. PRAISE waiteth for thee, O God, in Sion: and unto thee shall the vow be performed. 2 O thou that hearest prayer, unto thee shall all flesh come. 4 Blessed is the man whom thou choosest, and causest to approach unto thee, that he may dwell in thy courts: we shall be satisfied with the goodness of thy house, even of thy holy temple.

By terrible things in righteousness wilt thou answer us, O God of our salvation: who art the confidence of all the ends of the earth, and of them that are afar off upon the sea. 6 Which by his strength setteth fast the mountains; being girded with power. 7 Which stilleth the noise of the seas, the noise of their waves, and the tumult of the people.

8 They also that dwell in the uttermost parts are afraid at thy tokens: thou makest the outgoings of the morning and evening to rejoice. 9 Thou visitest the earth, and waterest it: thou greatly enrichest it with the river of God, which is full of water: thou preparest them corn, when thou hast so provided for it. 10 Thou waterest the ridges thereof abundantly: thou settlest the furrows thereof: thóu makest it soft with showers, thou blessest the springing thereof. 11 Thou crownest the year with thy goodness, and thy paths drop fatness. 12 They drop upon the pas tures of the wilderness: and the little hills rejoice on every side. 13 The pastures are clothed with flocks; the valleys also are covered over with corn; they shout for joy, they also sing.
